HomeMy WebLinkAboutWomens Commission - Minutes - 07/19/2006City of Fort Collins Women's Commission July 19, 2006 Members Present: Barbara Goff, Beth Etter, Stacy Arnold Members not Present: Pat Lewis (excused), Tanya McCandlish (excused), Shelby Maier (excused), Mona Shatz Liaisons not Present: Karen Gebhardt, Marjorie McTaggart (excused) Staff Liaison: Suzanne Jarboe -Simpson I. Call to Order Meeting was called to order at 6:35pm Minutes from the previous meeting were not approved, since a quorum wasn't present II. Announcements Barbara has been in conversation with the League of Women Voters, talking about their "College of Political Knowledge" and the Commission's interest in increasing women's participation in the political process. League members have offered to share their training materials with the Commission. Barb will follow up with the League. She will also find out if the League keeps any statistics on numbers of voters in various elections, particularly women voters. Barb has also been in touch with Dr Preble, chair of the City's Human Relations Commission, learning more about the roundtable discussions sponsored by the HRC. The HRC defines a topic, location and time, and invites members of the public to stop by and share their opinions and insights. The HRC holds its roundtable discussions at a coffee house in Old Town, Fort Collins. Barb will follow up with HRC members to learn more about their topic selection process, etc. III. Old Business Panel Discussion: Beth announced that KRFC is very interested in hosting a panel discussion on women in politics, sponsored by the Women's Commission. The members suggested targeting local women who have served in elected offices. Commission members agreed to target September for this panel discussion. Brainstormed invitation list included: Ann Azari, Susan Kirkpatrick, Peggy Reeves, Karen Weitkunat, Janna Ley, Joni Friedman Commission members brainstormed a list of possible questions for the panel discussion. Beth volunteered to: write up the questions, talk with KRFC staff about possible dates and program length, draft an invitation to gauge participant interest, confirm addresses with Commission members, provide this information and material to Suzanne, who will mail out the letters. Newsletter: Commission members agreed to target October for distribution of the first newsletter. Stacy will contact Paula C. to check on the newsletter skeleton she had created. She will email writing assignments to Commission members Beth volunteered to do the initial newsletter layout. Stacy will help with editing. Beth will contact DeAnna Ludwin (CSU English Department) to check on possible interns to assist with newsletter layout. Membership Update: Barb received an invitation to apply for re -appointment to the Commission, once her term is completed in December 2006. She will submit that paperwork to the City Clerk's Office by the deadline. The Clerk's Office received one application in response to the ad they had run. They have extended the deadline for applications. If they don't receive any more applications, they will attempt to fill the vacancies as part of their fall recruitment for Board and Commission members. Website: Barb has been in touch with Karla Smith, in the Clerk's Office regarding possible assistance with the Commission's website. Karla has offered to meet with the Commission to talk about website changes and improvements. Nametags: Suzanne took down the information about the name tags, and vendor contact information. Budget: nothing new to report IV. New Business Forum: the Commission members discussed the possibility of providing an educational forum targeting women, on becoming involved in the political process in Larimer County Tentatively planned for November/December 2006, this forum may be based on the materials Barb receives from the League of Women Voters. V. Other Barb will contact Mona this week to discuss her participation as a Commission member VI. Adjourn Meeting adjourned at 7:50pm
