BOARD MEMBERS PRESENT: Elaine Boni Paige Backlund Jarquin Joann Ginal Maryanne Ingratta BOARD MEMBERS ABSENT: Moin Siddiqui STAFF MEMBERS PRESENT: Rebecca O'Donnell, Staff Liaison Angelina Sanchez -Sprague, Recorder 1. CALL TO ORDER The meeting was called to order by Maryanne Ingratta at 5:30 p.m. PUBLIC INPUT Parker Preble, former Chairperson of the HRC, was a guest. He spoke of his last interview with the Coloradoan on the occasion of his resignation and his last conversation with Mayor Hutchinson. He expressed his support of the remaining members and complimented them on their energy & focus. He stayed for the remainder of the meeting. 2. GUEST SPEAKER None. 3. AGENDA REVIEW No changes were made to the agenda as proposed. APPROVAL OF MINUTES Elaine Boni made a motion to approve the August 10, 2006 minutes as corrected. Paige Backlund Jarquin seconded the motion. The motion passed. Paige Backlund Jarquin moved to approve the August 29. 2006 special meeting minutes as corrected. Joann Ginal seconded the motion. The motion passed. BUDGET REPORT Staff Liaison reported a balance of the 2006 budget of $727.92. o Maryanne asked members to bring to the next meeting suggestions/costs for how to use the remaining budget. She would like to start the wish list with NCMC like name tags for commission members to use at community events and new commission member business cards. HRC October 12, 2006 — Page 2 4. COMMITTEE REPORTS Reevaluate committees using the 2006 Work Plan. Maryanne wanted to do double duty by reviewing committees in the context of also preparing for the 2007 Work Plan being due to the City Clerk's office by the end of November. Members offered suggestions for change. o Maryanne will draft the document using member feedback on • Educational Outreach • Government Relations • Media & Community Recognition/Breakfast • Executive and will distribute a draft to member for their review prior to the November g'h meeting when they're scheduled to review/approve the 2007 Work Plan. 5. NEW BUSINESS Restructuring Agenda and Liaison Reports. Maryanne believes it's important to maintain connections with other entities in the community with similar interests. To meet commission goals of running their monthly meetings as effectively as possible. It was suggested that members might submit their liaison reports in writing prior to the meeting and making them a part of the minutes. Maryanne suggests getting on target groups mailing lists and scan their minutes and monitor opportunities for interacting. o She asks members to consider and make recommendations on how to best interact with other groups and to report that interaction to the Commission. Future CSU Diversity Conference and HRC participation o Maryanne to speak to Shay Bright about who the contact is for CSU Diversity Conference so the HRC could get information/deadline information for their calendar. • Elderly, Disabled & Dial -A -Ride. Those interested in supporting the efforts of the elderly and disabled community to preserve Dial -a -Ride as is should plan to attend City Council's October 161t' meeting to speak in support of Council not cutting budget on the Dial -A -Ride program. • Retreat. The Commission agreed that after the newest members have a chance to get oriented to the board and their work, that a team retreat be scheduled — three to four months in the future. 6. OLD BUSINESS • NIOTA Community Network Forum. Thirty individuals attended the NIOTA networking program --setting up tables to display and distribute information. Elaine and JoAnn were in attendance with Elaine distributing the HRC brochures at a table with the HRC banner. Phil Koster, in his remarks, credited the HRC for helping with NIOTA's startup. Referendum I: what's next? The Commission agreed with the passage at the Education Committee meeting of the Resolution of the Human Relations Commission Recommending Support for Referendum I, it's time to take the next steps in supporting that effort. o Maryanne to contact Pat Ferrier at The Colorodoan regarding space in the Op/Ed section for an HRC article that includes a cover memo and a copy of the resolution. HRC October 12, 2006 — Page 3 Connect People Workshop: Important Feedback from Organizations Participating in that Session. A number of people attended the Connect People Workshop. Many organizations such as the CSU, NCMC and NIOTA had interested and would like the HRC to take a leadership role in developing a partnership toward inclusive communities. They believe the work is in organizing, cooperating and messaging. The work includes interacting with the CSU International Program and Poudre School District teachers as well as having a presence at community events such as New West Fest, Neighborhood Night Out, and cultural fairs similar to one organized in Longmont on September 26`". They believe that branding is critical to the efforts success o Maryanne asked members to review the summation of Elaine's notes from the workshop that she'd prepared. She also asked members to review the NCMC Press Release related to Arlene Nederdog Merchant Awareness Award. UPCOMING EVENTS October 13, Friday Strength Through Peace is showing the film Iraq for Sale: The War 7 to 9 p.m. Fort Collins Profiteers at The Armstrong Hotel. This film uncovers the connections between private corporations making a killing in Iraq and the decision makers who allow them to do so. Due to the overwhelming response, we are adding a second showing. Everyone is welcome to either showing, but please note that 50 seats will be reserved at the early show for people who signed up online at http://iragforsale.org/screenings.php. Iraq for Sale was directed by Robert Greenwald, who also directed Walmart: The High Cost of Low Price and Outfoxed: Rupert Murdoch's War on Journalism. In this film, Greenwald shows what happens to everyday Americans when corporations go to war. According to Ken Fox of TV Guide, Greenwald's latest movie is ,.crucial to fully understanding the Iraqi/American enterprise." Iraq for Sale has been funded and distributed completely outside of corporate America. This showing coincides with its worldwide premier, which runs from October 8 - October 14. Cleveland, Loveland HRC October 12, 2006 — Page 4 October 15, Sunday Faith, Family, & Fairness —Why Domestic Partnerships Matter 7 p.m. Fort Collins PFLAG (Parents, Family and Friends of Lesbians and Gays) invites the community to an educational event about Referendum I, as well as a reception for PFLAG's national executive director. The event is at Foothills Unitarian Church, 1815 Yorktown Avenue. The evening will feature: • Couples speaking about why Referendum I matters to them — basic legal protections, medical issues, family issues • Jody Huckaby, PFLAG's national executive director, sharing PFLAG stories of progress toward fairness • Jean Hodges, PFLAG's Mountain West regional director, speaking about what individuals can do to make a difference • The Rev. Access to interpreters, translators and bilingual materials were also cited as a required element for a favorable outcome. In our continued effort to provide, the most updated and practical information possible, Spanish Communications will be conducting "Cultural Awareness" and "Marketing to the Latino community" seminars throughout Northern Colorado. The purpose of these seminars will be to share information from both the business and Latino communities, to discuss cultural issues that may influence a business either favorably or negatively and key points that affect verbal as well as non-verbal communication. Seminars will be held at the Loveland Chamber of Commerce, 5400 Stone Creek Circle. The seminars will be interactive and highly encourage participation from those attending. Seminars are scheduled for 1 '/z hours with a Yz hour for questions. Cost is $45. The Fort Collins Public Library invites everyone in the community to celebrate an ancient Aztec tradition, the Day of the Dead, with crafts, music, dance, and stories from Latin America. There will be traditional Mexican food, Brazilian Samba, and tango. Laura Resau will read from her book "What the Moon Saw" and there will be a craft on Aztec costumes. All ages are welcome. The altar exhibit is a display dedicated to lost loved -ones. This event is free to the public. ANNOUNCEMENTS. Paige reported: • She had attended Former Mexican President Zedillo's talk at CSU on Globalization; • she'd met with the HRC Council Liaison David Roy to share their hopes with regard to the interviews and filling the Commission vacancies • she'd learned that First Call was not going to add a Cultural Competency program to their intake.
