August 2006 meeting minutes
Present: Shelby, Pat, Barbara, Beth, Tanya, and Marjorie (Senior Advisory Board liaison)
Absent: Karen, Suzanne, Stacey
Meeting called to order at 6:40 pm.
Announcements
Shelby regaled us with stories of her internship with NOW this past summer in Washington,
D.C. With her new found knowledge, Shelby can host a forum on becoming a political
candidate. She suggests we talk to the local Election Director about a training in the Spring:
"Gear up for `08".
Beth moved to approve the minutes from June and July. Shelby seconded. Minutes
approved.
Business
Budget - Barb and Suzanne developed the budget. Everyone looked it over. Shelby
suggested adding an explanation to the budget for the essay contest: Priscilla Huston wants
to be more involved, and Shelby believes her involvement will increase participation in the
contest. Beth suggested adding the $50 to the newsletter budget (from $250 to $300). This
brings the total budget to $1700. Barb will make the changes and submit to Suzanne.
September Panel - We have had two responses so far: Jana Ley would like to participate;
Peggy Reeves would like to, but cannot. She has a prior engagement. The commission will
do reminder calls by August 28 to follow up with invitees. Beth will ask each commission
member to help call. We'll select our group of 3 by August 28. We'd like a diverse
representation of elected offices.
Advertisement for panel - Barb and Beth will attend the panel at KRFC. Barb is going to
contact Karla Smith to see if we can get an advert on the city cable channel bulleting. Barb
will also contact the Coloradoan (Community Calendar) and the Ft. Collins Weekly to
advertise the event.
Newsletter - The commission defined the requirements for the CSU internship. The intern is
responsible for producing 3 publications for 3 credit hours; must attend the commission
meetings every month; Beth will be the supervisor; the commission will edit and approve all
the content (make sure everything's legal). Beth will type up the internship requirements
and send them to Deanna Ludwin at CSU who will post them on RamMail and discuss at
orientation meetings.
We still need to get a hold of Paula regarding her newsletter ideas. No success yet.
Senior Advisory Board report - The SAB announced that the Larimer Bar Association and
the Elder Association are doing a Senior Law Day where seniors can ask lawyers for advice.
Suggestion: the Women's Commission may be able to do something similar with a target
audience of women.
The SAB does quarterly outreach meetings. Each member researches and speaks about a
topic, asks for audience input on the topic, and takes the results back to city council. The
SAB would like to create a policy on aging to submit to council. There is an office on aging
at the county level, but they do not have a policy.
Other
Tanya would like to do a seminar on Medicare for seniors. She could work with the Aspen
Club to set that up.
Beth moved to adjourn the meeting. Shelby seconded. Meeting adjourned at 8:05 pm.
