The suggestion made by the Education Committee for a group training session conducted by Mr. Homer Bolinger was tabled until the September meeting. It is hoped, by that time, that the Commission will again be at full strength. Mr. Luke Long was asked to report on the Northern Colorado News Media Conference held at CSU on May 19, 1971. This conference was spon- sored by the CSU Human Relations Committee and the Fort Collins Commission on Human Relations. The keynote speaker was Dr. Delbert McGuire of the Journalism Department at CSU. Panel members were Ernest Andrade, Jane Tester and Arthur Roy. Mr. Penfield Tate was moderator. The conference stressed covering all the community by the News Media. We hope to follow up with further seminars to improve relations between communities and the News Media. The Grievance and Investigation Committee was asked to report on the complaint against the Sportsman Cafe. Dorothy Godinez reported that the Committee visited the owner and he informed them that he did not know Miss Hill was marrying a black man and that he had been looking for a replacement • 6 • 0 Human Relations Commission Monthly Meeting Page 2 June 3, 1971 for her for three weeks. His reason was that she had been late as much as 30 to 40 minutes much of the time and did not wear the required uniforms. The Committee did not check the time cards. They tried four times to see the complainant at her apartment but never found her at home. They also left a note but received no response to it. With these efforts, they consider the case closed. Luke Long gave the report on the complaint against Kopy-Kwik. He and Dr. Preble had talked to the owner and he seemed to think there was no problem. Mr. Singh was then asked to give his version of events lead- ing up to the complaint. After much discussion, the Commission decided to invite the owner of Kopy-Kwik to a special meeting on June 24 to tell his side of the story. It is felt this is the only way we can actively make a finding in the case. The chairman was asked to send the letter through the City Manager's Office. (copy enclosed) Under new business, it was suggested by the chairman that the Com- mission should seriously consider an addition to the bylaws to the effect that if a Commission member was absent excessively without excuse, he should be asked by the City Council to resign so that a more effective member could be appointed in his place. This will be discussed and acted upon at the June 24 meeting. There being no further business that could be conducted without a quorum, the meeting was adjourned with the reminder that there would be no regular meeting in July; but that the special meeting on June 24, 1971 would take the place of it. It was urged that every member be present at this meeting at 7:30 p.m. at 225 Second Street. Respectfully submitted Dorothy Godinez Acting Secretary Enc.
