Laporte Avenue February 8, 2001, 5:30-7:00 p.m. Council Liaison: Bill Bertschy I Staff Liaison: Angelina Powell Phone: 221-6525 Chairperson: Bob Lenk Phone: 493-5809 A regular meeting of the Human Relations Commission was held on February 8, 2001 in the CIC Room, 300 W. Laporte Avenue. HRC Members present Dan Devine, Ingrid Kolstoe, Bob Lenk, Richard Miller, Parker Preble. HRC Members absent with notification Mary Gomez, Shion Hung and Man Oberoi Staff Members present: Angelina Powell, HRC Staff Liaison I. Call to Order. The meeting was called to order by Chairperson Bob Lenk at 5:35 p.m. II. Resignation. New commission member Dolores Kueffler tendered her resignation. The commissioners were disappointed that Dolores was not able to continue. The commission was happy to hear that another individual was interested and that an appointment would be made by City Council at their February 201h Council meeting. III. Approval of Minutes. Chair Bob Lenk asked for a motion to approve the minutes of the regular meeting held on January 11, 2001. Richard Miller made the motion to approve. Parker Preble seconded the motion. The minutes were approved unanimously. IV. Subcommittees. The only subcommittees to meet since the last regular commission meeting were the Diversity and Human Relations Award Subcommittees. Diversity Subcommittee. The Diversity committee met in late January with Chair Mary Gomez. All new commission members (Dolores Kueffler, Ingrid Kolstoe, Parker Preble, and Richard Miller) were in attendance. The meeting was an open exchange of information with the new members interested in getting a historical context and in sharing ideas of what might be done at the subcommittee level. There was some discussion on how the subcommittee would be interested in taking a lead with training for the full commission so members could get to know each other better and build a team as well as become more versed in diversity issues. n - - - - - • Angelina has offered to get information on what training resources might be available from the city and to check with commission members of what their preferences are for times that might have available for training. Human Relations Award Subcommittee. The subcommittee had been quite busy with the start up process for the annual Human Relations Award nominations. Work had been done on revising the nomination form and cleaning up the mailing list as well as selecting the location. New this year was Human Relations Commission Page 2 the development of web pages (thanks to Shion) that will reside on the City's web site (www.fcgov.com/hra) until the nominations close March 31, 2001. The date for the awards breakfast has been set. It'll be Tuesday, May 1, 7:30-9:00 a.m., the Columbine Room at the Fort Collins Lincoln Center. Council Liaison Bill Bertschy, Mayor Martinez and City Manager John F. Fischbach have confirmed that they will be in attendance. Sonny Lubick will be the keynote speaker. Commission members suggested getting a $30 gift certificate from the Foothills Mall as an honorarium for the keynote speaker. Ingrid will take the lead on a special outreach effort to increase the number of nominations in the youth category. In addition to mailings to middle and high schools and ASCSU, special requests will be made to area churches to forward copies of the nomination requests to youth ministers. Ingrid will be personally visiting middle and high schools to work with staff and student leaders to spread the word about the award nomination process. V. New Business. Chair Bob Lenk said that in a March or April meeting timeframe that we'll need to elect new officers including chairs for the subcommittees. Parker Preble mentioned that he had attended the Northern Colorado Multicultural Corn February I't meeting. He reported on their current efforts and the fact that they're looking for members. • He suggests there could be value in exchanging minutes (so we can be informed on our mutual efforts and to identify areas for collaboration.) He expressed an interest in continuing to help the HRC understand if, and at what levels, collaboration might be beneficial to both groups. VI. Announcements. The Northern Colorado Multicultural Corp. is sponsoring " Reflections in the Mirror —a Dilemma of Conscious" on Saturday, March 24 from noon to 4 p.m. at Lesher Junior High, 1400 Stover. Cost for adults is $10. Preregistration is requested. The Human Rights office is coordinating the Multicultural Community Retreat in Estes Park on March 29 and 30'h Parker Preble has registered and will be attending the retreat. Bob Lenk reported on legislation he's tracking in the Colorado State Legislature that concerns discrimination, civil rights and hate crimes. VII. Adjournment. Dan Devine made a motion to adjourn the meeting. Ingrid Kolstoe seconded the motion. The meeting was adjourned by Chair Bob Lenk at 6:55 p.m.
