A regular meeting of the Human Relations Commission was held on January 10, 2002 in the CIC Room,
300 W. Laporte Avenue.
HRC Members present Shion Hung, Mary Gomez, Ken Gordon, Jr, Rita Klepac, Bob Lenk, Man
Oberoi, Parker Preble, Richard Miller

Call to Order. The meeting was called to order by Chairperson Bob Lenk at 5:35 p.m.
II. Welcome of new member. Chair Bob Lenk welcomed the newest member of the commission, Ken J.
Gordon Jr. Ken is a VP of Marketing at Ultimate Support Systems and brings vast experience to the
position having served on Human Relations, Race Relations and Community Relations committees in
South Carolina, Illinois, Missouri, Virginia and Pennsylvania. Ken is a Doctor of Communications
and has a Ph.D in Counseling.
Bob Lenk provided an overview of the subcommittee system and the offered information on our
current work plan. Ken asked commission members to share their impressions of the
environment/challenges for the Commission. He wondered what type of working relationship we had
with the media when developing events which promote and appreciate diversity? The commission
welcomed Ken and looks forward to a long term working relationship.
111. Approval of Minutes. Approval of minutes for the November and December meeting will be delayed
to approval at the February meeting when the documents will be ready for the Commission's review.
IV. Subcommittee Reports.
Police Subcommitee. Rich Miller reported that the CRB did not meet in December. No news to report
on the Police Subcommittee's work plan.
Diversity Subcommittee. Chair Mary Gomez reported that there was no meeting in December. The
next meeting of the Diversity Subcommittee is scheduled for January 23, 5 p.m., Room 215, Spruce
Hall on the CSU campus.
Human Relations Award Subcommittee. Chair Shion Hung will be beginning the process of planning
the 2002 Human Relations Awards in January. He asks that those members who are interested in

participating plan to attend an organizing meeting set for Saturday, January 19, 2 p.m, 357 Albion,
Unit C4.
V. New Business.
2001 Annual Report The 2001 Annual Report is due to the City Clerk's office on January 31. Chair
Bob Lenk suggests the chairs of the subcommittees draft a report for their subcommittees and submit
to him by Thursday, January 24. Bob will coordinate and submit to Angelina by Monday, January 28.
VII. Annoucements.
Bob Lenk announced the Martin Luther King Community March starts at the CSU Oval at 11 a.m. on
Monday, January 21, 2002.
Bob Lenk noted the hrterfaith Council is sponsoring a "Fundamentalism: Understand the Issues Both
Religious & Political" program on Tuesday, January 29 from 6:45-9:30 p.m. at Plymouth Congregation
Church, 916 W. Prospect. The foram will cover the political and religious roots of fundamentalism in
the three Abrahamic traditions: Judaism, Christianity and Islam. More information is available by
calling Dr. Jo Anne Grace at 493-7512, ext. 15 or Chaplain Phil Koster at 495-8551.
VIII. Adjournment. Shion Hung made a motion to adjourn. Rita Klepac seconded. The meeting was
adjourned at 7:10 p.m,
