Mason June 13, 2002, **5:30 — 6:45 p.m. Council Liaison: Marty Tharp I Staff Liaison: Angelina Powell Phone: 221-6525 Chairperson: Bob Lenk Phone: 493-5809 A regular meeting of the Human Relations Commission was held on June 13, 2002 in the Community Room, 215 N. Mason. HRC Members present Ken Gordon Jr, Bob Lenk, Man Oberoi, Parker Preble and Rich Miller HRC Members absent Mary Gomez, Rita Klepac, and Ingrid Kolstoe /with notification Council Liaison present: Marty Tharp Staff Members present: Barb Spalding, Human Rights Officer Call to Order. The meeting was officially called to order by Chairperson Bob Lenk at **6.25 p.m. with the arrival of Richard Miller and the presence of a quorum. Approval of Minutes. Chair Bob Lenk asked for a motion to approve the May 9, 2002 minutes. Parker Preble moved to approve the minutes. Ken Gordon seconded the motion. The commission voted unanimously to accept. III. Subcommittee Reports. Diversity Subcommittee The May 22 subcommittee meeting was cancelled. Bob Lenk has entered 2001data on Excel and begun analysis/graphing work. Chair Bob Lenk spoke with Council Liaison Marty Tharp about the data and she expressed an interest in seeing the diversity information related to Board & Commission application and appointments before the next round of B&C interviews. Human Relations Award Subcommittee. No report. Police Subcommittee. Subcommittee chair Rich Miller attend the CRB meeting that took place on April 17 after a demonstration of non -lethal, Bean Bag, Sage Gun (rubber bullets) and Pepper Spray weapons took place on the range near the Detention Center. At the May 15' CRB, two member vacancies were noted. IV. Liaison Reports Northern Colorado Multicultural Corp. Liaison Parker Preble did not attend the last NCMC meeting as it was a work session on their Business Plan. V. Old Business. Citizen Liaison Program Training: Mary Gomez, Parker Preble, Rita Klepac and Angelina Powell will receive training on June 18 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Ken Gordon, Jr. & Rich Miller have signed up for training on July 2 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Alternate Meeting dates in July, August and September. Staff Liaison Angelina Powell (outside meeting time) had requested consideration for alternate meeting dates July through September due to a conflict with another work assignment evenings the 2' Thursdays of those months. She did a poll of Human Relations Compsion Page 2 • member availability on July 18, August 1 and September 5 as alternative dates. Those dates worked for the majority of members. At the meeting Man Oberoi noted the August 11' date was only 2 weeks from the July 18' meeting date and recommended a change to August 15. Man Oberoi made a motion to accept the alternate July 18th date with the understanding that that a decision would be made on the remaining dates at the next meeting. Rich Miller seconded. The change was approved unanimously. VI. New Business. MLK Lunch/HR Awards. Human Rights Officer Barb Spalding reported on the City and CSU participation on a planning committee for the upcoming Martin Luther King Lunch Awards. The committee is seeking participation by the Human Relations Commission. Ken Gordon, Jr. is planning on attending the next meeting as a representative of the Commission. VII. Announcements Filling HRC Vacancv(ies). Chair Bob Lenk had been in contact with Karla Smith, Board & Commission Coordinator in the City Clerk's office on filling the vacancy created by Shion Hung's departure. As Council Liaison Marty Tharp mentioned she had not yet received information on the commission request, Bob will follow-up with the City Clerk's office to confirm timing of notification of Council and filling the vacancy.
