HomeMy WebLinkAboutParks And Recreation Board - Minutes - 09/18/1973FORT GOLLINS PARRS AND RECREATION DEPARTMENT PARRS AND RECREATION ADVISORY BOARD MI1WTBS OF MERT.ING Septaiber 1, 1973 The meeting of the Fort Collins Parks and Recreation Department pdvisory Board was called to order by Gladys Eddy at 7:05 P.M. in the City Council meeting room. New Board members introduced themselves. Various members of the Parks and Recreation staff were present to explain their duties including construction, maintenance and supervision of activities. Represa_iting Mr. Bob Brunton, City Manager, was Mr. Mike Dilhllio. He presented the proposed `74 budget for the Parks and Recreation Department. The $931,000 budget is the largest amount everyearmarked for park. development. City Council will pass on the budget the end of November. Mr. Tom Frazier reporvA on recreation programs. Adult programs are experiencing more rapid growth than children's programs. To accommodate all teams, softball games will have to be playe on Sunday nights next year, which slows a need for another softball field. Th concerns and trooper programs experienced a doubling in attendance. The Senior Citizens Center is now open 5 days a week; their programs also are showing an increase in growth. Fewer teenagers participated this summer at the Youth Center. Mra. Jean Helburg reported on other recreation programs. Girls' soccer and flag football are two new programs. Junior tennis next year will be taught in the spring, as well as summer., 40 troopers, ages 14-17 were on school playgrounds to assist leaders. Mr. Bill Kane presented proposed plans for a bike pathway, which would follow route of Spring Creek thj.migh the City. Proposed path would be 711 miles long; 4 to 5 miles would be within the City. The plan calls for an 8 foot paved surface, thus floodway easement along the creek could be put to public use. There are only 3 ateas where path could not stay along the creek. Certain portions could be done soon; completion would take several years, due to acquiring right-of-way. H. R. Phillips discussed - 1. Beattie Park Seeding and now sprinkling system installedI tennis courts to be built 2. Brown Farm Park Location has been charged to near Blevino School to tie in programs and gronuds. Ball diamonds and picnic tables have been placed there. Tennis courts at Blevins w311 be resurfaced; basketball goals will be in parking lots. 3. New indoor pool Coat now stands at $725,000; pool lining will be of aluminum. 4. City Park pool Filter system needs to be replaced at cost of $28,000. The community education concept was explained by Mr. Frazier as a pooling of resources of the school syatem and the Recreation Department; the former supplies the physical facilities while the latter supplies the direction and supervision of programs. Thus there are many centers where the community can be involved in learning and recreational programs, rather than just one central building. , Mr. Carl Jorgensen said that Fort Collins has lost only 50 trees out of 10,000 to elm disease. Of all Colorado cities, Port.Collina is in the best condition as far as Dutch Elm Disease is concerned.
