HomeMy WebLinkAboutParks And Recreation Board - Minutes - 10/01/1974r Parks and Recreation Advisory Board Meeting of October 1, 1974 The meeting of the Fort Collins Parks and Recreation Advisory Board was called to order by the President, Gladys Eddy, at 7:30 P.M. in the Parks and Recreation office. Minutes of the previous meeting were approved as presented. Mrs. Gladys Eddy commanded H. R. Phillips and the Parks and Recreation staff for the excellent job they are doing with the Parks and Recreation programs. Mrs. Eddy urged the Board to become familiar with the schedule for use of the now indoor swimming pool. The city will use it part of the day and the schools will use it part of the day. The Parks and Recreation Department plans to make an awareness of the uses of the pool through service clubs. The proposed indoor pool schedule was submitted to the Board. It was noted that the schools will start instruction in swimming at the 4th grade level. November 23rd is the target date for opening the pool. It was emphasised that the schedule for the first year will be experimental. The Parks and Recreation Department plans to have two weeks of public swimming, before the total program and schedule are implemented, in order to work out any problems areas. Parking facilities, landscaping, and the area around the pool are being worked on. Mr. Bob Brunton stated that the Human Resource Commission is con- sidering funding the Northaide Youth Center. He asked the Board to con- sider whether this is a fragmentation of the existing youth programs and if the youth center should be funded since the community education concept is being promoted at this time. Discussion was held and Lela Ryder and Donna Beard are to act as liaison with the council, Parks and Recreation, and the Youth Center. Mr. Brunton stated that the council has asked for more analysis on fees for the recreational programs. It was generally felt that adult fees should be increased to meet costs and that the youth fees should be re-evaluated. Virgil Taylor, Superintendent of parks, explained the lay out of the new building for the Parks, Forestry, and the Park Planner, which is located by the old city golf course. Mr. Al Beat of the Collegian was present to hear about the proposal for the new Lee Martinez Park. The park will cover approximately 70 acres. It includes plans for four tennis courts, three basketball courts, a baseball diamond, a large natural area, trails, a shelter area, and a farm for domestic animals. Members of the Board felt that the plan for this park is excellent. Tom Frazier reported that the summer programs had gone well for the adult sports, the youth programs, and the Senior Citizens programs. Larry Brooks reported that the outdoor pool had received $17,000 in revenue this year; a $4,500 increase over the previous years. IF Jean Helburg reported that the Woman's Softball and the girls Ponytail leagues had been very successful. She said that the belly dancing classes were extremely popular and that the tennis superzisor had done a goad job this year. She also reported that the Trooper and Trooperette program was successful. Dave Gress reported Lhat "he summer maintenance and landscaping pro;rac: had progressed very well. They will continue to move trees until the weather gets bad. He talked about the many unusual trees which the Parks Department will start propogating. Mrs. Gladys Eddy announced that the J. Pay French complex has been officially dedicated and is open. She expressed personal and board pleasure for the selection of Hr. French for this honor. Don Southwick moved that the board not hold another meeting in October unless something special cosea up. Hay French seconded the motion and it was passed. The next rueating %gill be held the 3rd Tuesday in November. The meeting was adjourned at 10.15 P.M.
