Call to Order: 6:35pm II. Approval of Minutes: February Minutes approved as distributed III. Announcements: Marjorie McTaggart will be the Senior Advisory Board Liaison to the Women's Commission; letter of welcome provided to new members from Beth Etter, Board Secretary IV. Old Business: 1. Junior High School Essay Contest: Letters were sent to the winners through the schools Stacey has worked with the PSD Staff to arrange for about 5 minutes at the Board's March 27, 2006 meeting for recognition of the contest winners and their teachers All participants need to be present by 6:30pm at the Administration Building on LaPorte Avenue Stacey has also arranged for the use of a conference room in the PSD administration building for a reception following the appearance before the School Board :• Awards for students include: certificate, trophy, $25 savings bond, Home State Bank, $10 Mugs coffee coupon, $15 DBA Downtown Bucks, Fort Fun Certificate Cost for trophies was about $60 — this expense was not budgeted for in 2005 .• Karen Weitkunat, Mayor Pro-Tem will attend both the presentation in front of the School Board, and the reception. She will speak about a woman who was influential in her life Winners stories will be read during the reception: Barb will read the stories from the 7"' grade winners, Beth will read the stories from the 81" grade winners, Paula will read the stories from the 9`^ grade winners s� Photos of the winners will be taken Recipients will also be recognized at the City Council Meeting on April 4, 2006, in Council Chambers, 300 LaPorte Avenue, at 5:30pm Follow up: Barb will check with Cindy to confirm that the students and their teachers are aware of the recognition event on the 271", and whether they plan to attend Barb will contact the school columnist regarding a story on this award Suzanne will check with the Attorney's office to verify that students' names can be publicized Request that someone send out an email to remind all Commission members about the event on the 27`" Letters thanking the teachers and the businesses providing the awards need to be written and mailed 1 14 Thumbs Up in the Coloradoan? 2. Marcille N. Wood award: Two applications were received for this award The deadline for submissions will not be extended Commission members are asked to review the applications and email your votes to Beth Penny will pick up the trophy from All Sports; it was paid for using 2005 funds through the Human Rights Office Award Recipient will be recognized at the SEE Conference on April 1, sponsored through ELTC Award Recipient will also be recognized at the April 4, 2006 City Council meeting, in Council Chambers, 300 LaPorte 2. Name Change S• Official name change for the Commission, from Commission on the Status of Women, to the Women's Commission is being presented as an ordinance to City Council on April 18. :• Beth pulled together the historic information which will make up part of the packet for this request Follow up: Do Commission members need to be present for the ordinance reading? How do new Commission members get name tags? V. New Business Budget Discussion: Commission has requested information about the budgets for other boards and commissions Additional events: What kinds of events does the Commission want to focus on? Agreement that they should focus on education and resources Quarterly Fact Sheets? Quarterly Newsletter? Create a list serve? VI. Elections The following slate was presented to the Commission for 2006 officers: Barbara Goff, Chair Paula Cole, Vice Chair Beth Etter, Secretary This slate was unanimously accepted by the Commission members April Ig`" Agenda Topics: Review Essay Contest and MLW events: what worked? What changes are suggested for 2006? Budget 2006 Focuses The meeting was adjourned at 8:25pm.
