HomeMy WebLinkAboutHuman Relations Commission - Minutes - 08/11/1993HUMAN RELATIONS COMMISSION MINUTES Regular Meeting - August 11, 1993 Council Information Center, City Hall West 5:30 - 7:00 p.m. Council Liaison: Ann Azari Staff Liaisons: Jaime Mares Becky O'Donnell A regular meeting of the Human Relations Commission was held on Wednesday, August 11, 1993, in the Council Information Center, 300 LaPorte Avenue, City Hall West. HRC Members present: Rickie Calkins, Man Oberoi, Ramona Robertson, Rudy Garcia, Harold Wallace, Linda Beardsley, Letty Coykendall, Arnold Gum. Members absent: Shari Olsen Guest: Lt. Pat Kelly, Police Services Lu Fisk, CSW Liaison Staff Member Present: Becky O'Donnell I. Meeting was called to order by Rudy Garcia, chair at 5:35 P.M. A motion to approve the minutes of the regular meeting of July 8, 1993 with corrections in the CAB allocation description, was made by Arnold Gum, seconded by Harold Wallace. Yays: All present. Nays: None. Motion carried. II. Subcommittee reports: Police Subcommittee: Discussion as to the CLP advertisement ensued, with indications that a press distribution went out on July 16 and no news coverage as of yet. Harold Wallace advised he would personally contact Tony Balandarin with the Coloradoan to have the CLP ad run. it was also suggested that a copy of the CLP press release be sent to David Lipp and Leroy Gomez who had attended last month's HRC meeting wanting CLP information. Becky O'Donnell stated she would mail the press release to Mr. Lipp, Mr. Gomez and the Commission on the Status of Women. CED: Arnold Gum indicated that the CED subcommittee met on Wednesday 8/14. Leroy Gomez and David Lipp attended the meeting and shared their thoughts with the CED, assisting with the recommendations made on the H.R. Officer. Jaime Mares indicated that the City has budgeted $60,000.00 for a diversity program, that no specifics as to the HRO, and the duties and responsibilities of that position, as well as how the dollars will be spent, have not been defined at this time. A draft recommendation developed by the CED with regard to an HRO was presented by Arnold Gum for review by the HRC. With noted recommendations the draft was changed and will be forwarded to City Council via staff. Human Relations Commission August 11, 1993 Page 2 CED continued: Recommendation by Arnold Gum to replace Article II, Section 13-16, paragraph 6 definition of discrimination. It was recommended that members would review draft recommendation for the September meeting. Voices Video: Rickie Calkins advised the Voices Video was presented to the USDA, to a 9 member management and EEO staff on August 4. She stated she preferred not to use the 'agreement with organizations or groups requesting a presentation' as provided by CSU and asked for comments from HRC. She indicated that the next year should include more advertisement and more presentations from HRC facilitators. HRC Ordinance: The ordinance revision recommendations by the HRC is set to go before City Council on September 7 for approval. Along with the ordinance the City Diversity Plan is also to be approved by Council. A copy of the plan was presented to the HRC for review and comments prior to the September 7 council meeting. CAB: Harold Wallace indicated that site visits are underway which is why Shari Olsen could not attend the HRC meeting. III. Old Business: Reminder of the City of Aurora HRC Conference. No members appeared interested in attending, as date conflicted with the HRC regular meeting for September. IV. New Business: HRC retreat planned for next regular meeting on September 9, same place, longer time 5:30 to 9:00 p.m. V. Meeting adjourned at 7:00 p.m
