The personnel comprising the program were Jack Nicol, Dan King, Robek-t Seibel, Charles Burchfield of the Fort Collins Board of Realtors and Fhil Berg and John Hasselblad of the State Board of P.ealtors and Warren Alexander of the Colorado Civil Rights Commission. Dr. Dildine, President of the Fort Collins Co mission, chaired the meeting in coopera- tion with Dr. Maurice Albertson, Chainiian of the Campus Committee. Dr. Dildine reviewed briefly the resuits of several previous joint meetings and read from the by-laws the purposes of the commission. The purposes of the CSU Committee were given by Dr. Albertson. The Chairmen told the people other than the comamission members that they should hold questions until after the formal presentation. A list of questions had been given to the Realtors before the meeting so that they could think about them briefly. Dr. Dildine asked the first question, "What low cost for purchasing or rental housing is realistically available in Fort Collins at the present time?" Jack Nicol answered with Dan king commenting. Mr. Nicol first gave the his ory and organization of the Board of Realtors and then continued stating that he felt that housing was available at all price ranges. T`ae CSU housing office keeps its om housing roster with the City bear& funnaling information to the CSU office as it becomes available. Dr. Levine asked, "How does the 33oard of P.e,altors look :apon the Federal Government program-: of providing low-cost housing to those needful or to minority groups?" The answer was that the Fort Collins Board as such had not considered this question; and then fore, they could not answer st. The State Board, hc;wever, answered that it wanted all 'housing to he adequate and that all housing was low-cost. Also, as a State Board they do not object to government funds but would like it to go through private enterprise. How toes a community determine its faciiities? Is it through survey conducted by realtors, churches, ate.? D-aas anyone know of existing conditions by experience? Peter Boespflug said there is cGusidersble housing for married students but not so for the single. It seems there is need for buffet type apartments at low cost. -There is housing in homes which is not expensive but living conditions in some cases are very undesirable. .The CSU Committee at present is trying to keep a current log of housing that is available. Joint Meeting 3 Y9arch 8, 1966 What about community housing separate or apart from CSU? Pat Bing mentioned that a housing problem exists especially in the low -low income groups including welfare. Where some of these people now live there is no indoor plumbing, no paved streets, no playground, no street lights, etc. Some of this type of undesirable housing is outside of the City Limits. Mr. Berg said that a determined effort should be made to provide good housing for all income groups and that the people should always be afforded the opportunity to move where there economics permits. Even though there am no limitations of where to move, the low income_ persons don't always know that they have the privilege. It is a responsibl_.:ity of the community to educate its citizens and encourage them to upgrade themselves. We hear it said that about 20 per cant of the foreign students while in Fort Collins are discriminated against? How do the realtors ece this? The City Board of Realto is not aware of this and if so the complaints are not reported. The problem must be handled or treated by the individuals. It was generally concluded that the moving i.r, Of minority groups does not effect land values. A stampede of listings in an aroa is sometimes frightening. Mrs. Hasselblad stated that all Cities in Colorado have discrimination; we have it in all facets of society including the churches. The sooner we admit to this the sooner we can coma forth with solutions which are the essential factors that compose Hayman ILalatiana. A Human Relations Commission is limited in what it can do -- the d-eslrability to'improve by the individual is ve r essential.. The c:,mmIssion can only educate and show what protections are afforded them. Warren Alexander stated that solutions are the necessary objectives. problems ca1n0. be corrected until we knoaa eachothtir, undea>tand each other , worship together, go to school together, visit in our backyards find in the suer markets. We didn°t crate the situation as it is -- we inherited iY. We ar.Lot akv avert' Of fort to eliminate it. Several peOP''_e of the audience told about their experience when they were looking for houses with Fort Collins Rerlto;9s. It seemed obvious to those speaking that evaanything for ralp_ was not for shcw to everyore that was looking. Ur. Cao.^l Levine wteatio:aed that the book,"A Ravol.u•xiixneers H'Mdbook" was worth T'eading. Ears. Gale Heiman stated that shy pr-sontly is $corking with minority groups.
