Agenda Review: No changes to the agenda. Citizen Participation: No citizen participation. Agenda: FOLLOW-UP ON COMMUNICATION PLAN/MEETING WITH COLORADOAN STAFF Ki Shih was the only board member/student who attended the meeting with Dave Greiling of the Coloradoan on December 10. As a result, the meeting was postponed, and Mr. Greiling will contact Ki with the rescheduled date. Guest Megan Barz has been discussing the idea of a teen section/page with Mr. Greiling since April, 1998. Her suggestion was to recognize outstanding teens (other than those in sports). Other possible features could include teen classifieds, editorials (staff or guests), upcoming events. A regular section/page would provide a place for teens to look for information. At this point, Ms. Barz feels that her efforts have reached a dead end. Even though Mr. Greiling Youth Advisory Board Minute December 2, 1998 Page 2 was initially interested in the idea, the Coloradoan staff does not have the time to produce a section/page for teens. Ben Brooks shared information about the teen page that appears every Friday in the Kansas City Star. A planning committee of 50 or so teens meets monthly to plan the 4 upcoming issues. The section is very popular and is looked forward to by area teens. It was suggested that perhaps teachers with skills in journalism be asked to help with such an endeavor in Fort Collins. Ben Brooks motioned to pursue support of a plan to develop a teen page in the Coloradoan. Following a second by Steve Hill, the Board voted unanimously in favor of the motion. Janet Urban will draft a letter to school newspaper editors (high schools and junior highs) to attend a meeting with the Youth Advisory Board on January 20 at 7:00 p.m. at the Youth Activity Center. MUSICFEST (BATTLE OF THE BANDS) UPDATE Peggy Bowers distributed copies of the grant proposal that was submitted to Fort Fund. There was discussion about whether to involve other organizations, whether an event of this scope can be pulled together by April 10, whether the date conflicts with RMHS battle of the bands, who is going to be "in charge". Dondi Barrowclough motioned to pursue this event on an open-ended schedule. Following a second by Robin Horak, the Board voted 7 for and 1 against. Job assignments are as follows: Concessions — Robin Horak Publicity — Farah Inam, Ben Brooks Band solicitation — Steve Hill, Ki Shih, Dondi Barrowclough Equipment — Steve Hill, Ki Shih Decorations — Farah Inam The next meeting of the planning committee will be at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday, January 12 at the Youth Activity Center. CONTINUATION OF SCHOOL REPORTS Frontier. Students were concerned about an incident at Old Town Square that involved police officers and a group of kids that were told they were being a fire hazard. They were not drinking, smoking or doing drugs. Students are not too excited about paying bus fares; if they had to pay fees, they probably would still use the service. They need a location to hang out besides local coffeehouses. Village and Heritage. No report. FCHS. Students like the idea of having something to do rather than driving around waiting for something to happen. They liked the idea of a youth telephone line; liked the Youth Advisory Board Otes • December 2, 1998 Page 3 idea of more interaction with police officers. The student council at FCHS will forward events to Eero Teene for publication on the youth web page. Centennial. Students want to be used as educators to their peers about behaviors but were only interested in doing service learning during school, not after school hours. CONFERENCE REPORT Ben Brooks reported on the conference he attended in Kansas City along with Stephen McHugh, a Centennial High School student, and Councilmembers Will Smith and Bill Bertschy. About 100 teens from around the country attended and were able to share ideas. He attended workshops, a delegate luncheon and idea -sharing sessions. Some cities represented have youths on their school board. Since a lot of city services and school services overlap, this becomes a great outlet for reaching kids. Ben will share his experience and information acquired with student councils, school counselors, business clubs, and various school district administrators. OTHER BUSINESS • Farah Inam invited Board members to attend International Day at Rocky Mountain High School on January 22. (Note: This date was later corrected. The event will be held on Friday, February 19 from 11:00 a.m. to 3:10 p.m.) • Phillip Chavez and other Board members were invited to the videotaping on January 7 of an installment of "Perspectives". • The January calendar for the Youth Activity Center and the December participation reports were distributed. • Farah Inam will be resigning from the Youth Advisory Board at the end of June, 1999. • Larimer County Asset Building Coalition will do a report to the community at the end of March based on a survey they conducted/are conducting. The Coalition is considering how to involve young folks in the presentation. • Ben Brooks thinks improvements could be made to the teen web page. He suggested setting up guidelines based on what the Board wants in order to make it look better. Scott Gammon will bring a digital camera to the next Board meeting to photograph Board members for inclusion on the web page. Adiournment: The Board voted unanimously for adjournment following a motion by Robin Horak and seconded by Dondi Barrowclough The meeting was adjourned at 9:00 p.m. t 'Re pectfully s bmitted, % Jalet Urban, Administrative Support Supervisor — Recreation
