HomeMy WebLinkAboutWomens Commission - Minutes - 09/18/1989REVISED COMMISSION ON THE STATUS OF WOMEN Minutes of September 18, 1989 Present: Ginny Webster, Kathleen Faller, Lynn Ann Johnson, Carolyn Duff, Doug Gertner, Brownie McGraw, Audrey Falkner, Virginia Webster, Lynne Warner, Duffy Kenning Absent: Dana Hiatt, Kathy Everett, Mary Clark, Jim Banning, Cynthia Boyd -Petersen, Alma Virgo -Morales Staff: Ann Turnquist ITEM I CONCLUSION/RECOMMENDATION/ACTION I FOLLOW-UP Minutes of I August 17, 891 Approved as printed. I Follow up: Chair Report Ann will continue long term with Parks & Recreation. Meeting with Susan Kirkpatrick. Susan gave overview on Council's perception of our Commission. In the past we followed task force recommendations. We are always playing catch-up. For the future, we need to recommend on time. Ann Turnquist will keep us informed. Duffy will also keep in touch with Ann and Susan Kirkpatrick. Economic incentive issues are primary. Recreation fees policy needs our input where women are concerned. Susan supports women's history month plans. Likes forums, if something good comes out. The presidents council is an example of good results. Suggests keeping newsletter idea on hold Carefully time our input with Council issues/planning/agenda. *We should focus on advising Council Our charge is to be prepared. Follow up long term Next year's Council goal for the 90's We should stay alert and prepare for input. Read & understand Council goals included in packets. Will discuss at next meet. Page 2 Committee OUTREACH Reports I Ginny Webster reviewed redommendations 'I I 13-19 in task force report. I Discussed and tabled newsletter idea. Agreed to continue support of June Friedman Memorial Fund at the Library. Planned to pursue info on intern for a I Ginny will call Women's Directory. I CSU to investigate I I intern assignments. Basic needs - Brownie Kathy E., Lynn W., Cynthia B., Alma V., Legal - Kathleen, Audrey, Lynn -Ann, Jim, Duffy. Outreach - Lynn -Ann, Carolyn D., Ginny, Doug. Ginny will contact Poudre-R-1 for a replacement for Ellen Bartlett. Lynn will call Dana Hyatt w/CSU affirmative action. Duffy will check with Susan K. re: Council's input/reaction to changing code to allow liaisons. Each member will review newspapers, etc & submit pertinent legislative items to Ann for the packets. Duffy will cover 4 times a year. Page 3 Committee wants to know what it costs community to support women who do not have adequate wages. Wants to explore this impact in depth, for services, food, housing, etc. What is an adequate wage for a woman to live in Fort Collins. Committee wants to gather data for advising Council on economic issues. Choices to take a positive approach with Council. BASIC NEEDS Kathleen Faller Reported on court watch. Attorneys are best resource for identifying gender bias in the court system. A Colorado attorney contacted by Kathleen is conducting court watch research. Good resources on gender bias issues are available. Identified concern for non -gender biased career selection beginning in early years with increasing efforts in junior high & senior high. How do basic needs issues relate to legal & outreach issues? Committee will follow-up. Focus on the short- term - a year's goal. Kathleen will receive more info & dist. to her committee will contact Susan Loche in Ft. for court related data. Ginny will contact Linda Williams w/ Poudre R-1 for a Women/Pace article on what district is doing to encourage non -gender biased career counciling & choices. Each member review recommendations on pages 65-71 to identify what fits with basic needs & other committees to properly distribute tasks/functions.
