Call Meeting to Order: The regular meeting of the Youth Advisory Board was called to order at
7:05 p.m. on Wednesday, March 4, 1998 at the Youth Activity Center by Board Vice -Chairperson Richy
Lynn.
Approval of Minutes: On a motion by Phillip Chavez and seconded by Bonnie Deaville, the minutes
of the meeting of February 4, 1998 were approved unanimously (6-0).
Agenda Review: No changes to printed agenda.
Citizen Participation: No citizen participation.

NON -ATHLETIC ACTIVITIES
At the Youth Advisory Board retreat in August, 1997, Board members identified some topics for
discussion during the upcoming year. One of the topics identified was the availability of non -athletic
activities for youths.
Some current offerings at the Youth Activity Center include fencing (which is very popular), indoor
lacrosse for beginners and intermediates, chess club (which averages 10 kids per night), and ski trips. An
alternative sports festival will be held on May 9 from 1:30-4:30 and will includes hands-on

demonstrations of horseshoe pitching, lacrosse, rugby, footbag, disc golf, fencing, Tai Kwon Do, and
other activities. This event will be free as all instructors are volunteering their time; families are
welcome. The schedule will be available after March 16.
r Dances have not been too successful in terms of attendance. Concerts are a possibility if promoters
adhere to the City's guidelines regarding smoking and drinking. Board members suggested that the YAC
host a "battle of the bands" as the recent one at Rocky Mountain High School was successful.
At the Northside Aztlan Community Center, folkloric dancing, fly tying, cooking, and tutoring are current
non -athletic activities offered as well as cartooning, drawing, and guitar. Harmonica and theater have also
been offered as non-traditional activities. Drop -in boxing is also available at NACC. Debra Bueno has
instructors who are willing to volunteer to teach private guitar lessons.
Recreation staff welcomes suggestions for program ideas.
WEB PAGE FOLLOW-UP
Dave Mosnik has put together a job description for a clerical aide to do web page development and
maintenance. The closing date is April 3. YAB members are asked to distribute the job description to the
schools.
BASH REPORT
The out-of-town BASH event has been rescheduled for March 21 to Glenwood Springs. The event will
consist of videos, dancing and swimming in the hot springs pool. Approximately 100 people have bought
tickets. Poudre High School will sponsor the next BASH event (a d.j. duel) near the end of April.
YOUTH ACTIVITY CENTER UPDATE
March calendars were distributed along with a schedule of Spring Break activities and participation
reports for January and February. Advance registration is required for Spring Break activities, and very
little has been done at this time. The March 13 deadline for summer job applications has been extended to
April 3.
NORTHSIDE AZTLAN COMMUNITY CENTER UPDATE
The monthly calendar was distributed as well as information on the summer basketball league. A lot of
registration has been taken recently for the Spring Break 3-on-3 tournament.
OTHER BUSINESS
• The letter recently received from the Mayor and City Council members in appreciation of the
Board's time and efforts was distributed to Board members.

• Steve Hill recently participated in a World Game at CSU. He described it as a model United
Nations with a quest for world peace. It was free to participants, but no doubt expensive to host.
Even though it was mostly for CSU students, some high school students were invited to attend.
Steve would like to see the City host something similar.
• A Teen Team Meeting will be held at the YAC on March 11 at 9:30 a.m. where different agencies
discuss what they do with local youths. YAB members are invited to attend.
• There is a job board at the YAC where job opportunities are categorized by minimum age.
Anyone looking for summer jobs should apply by April 3. Larimer County jobs will be posted by
Saturday.
• There will be a skateboard park meeting on Friday, March 6 at the Youth Activity Center at 3:00
p.m.
• The First Annual Multi -cultural Commission Conference will be held on Saturday March 28. It is
sponsored by the City, CSU, and other agencies.
• Staff welcomes program ideas for the summer edition of the Recreator.
• The next basketball league at the YAC starts the week of March 16 for ages 15 and older. Board
members are asked to notify interested people.
• Marissa Flores, who was introduced as the new member of the Youth Advisory Board as a TEAM
Fort Collins appointee at the February, 1998 meeting, is ineligible for that position because she is
currently employed by the City of Fort Collins. Ki-Shih has applied, and her application will be
forwarded to the City Clerk's office for confirmation by City Council.
Adjournment:
On a motion by Jo Faith and seconded by Phillip, the Board voted unanimously (7-0) to adjourn at 8:10
p.m.
