June 21, 1999

V. Business Items
A. Report on ten year update study: Connie has completed the formatting and
the study looks great. Waiting for some information from Audrey for the
table of contents. Black and green are two colors and we may have fewer
pages than we initially thought. Kwik Kopy will do the printing. Question as
to whether former Mayor Azari will write a forward letter to the report. She
was willing earlier but needed to see a copy of the report. Audrey was going
to contact Ann Azari. The Study Session has been moved to August 10".
Had discussed Annmarie doing an introduction and Joann and Danielle doing
the bulk of the presentation. Joann may be out of town that day. Amunarie
brought up that there is a very confusing page of statistics. This will be
reworked. Danielle will photo copy this information for commission
members and Connie will make transparencies. Will decide at our July 19
meeting who will actually present at the council session.
B. Report on Multicultural Commission Community Forum: Bobbie reported
that the group was immensely impressed with the presentation and thought
Joann did a greatjob in fielding questions. The group had great comments
and insights and brought a background of interest in the status of women.
Coloradoan wrote a nice article about the session. The makeup of the group
who heard the report were individuals who are active and concerned about
issues of discrimination and inclusivity. Joann also discussed with Amy
Bryer (reporter from Coloradoan) the possibility of her doing an article a
week on the study once it has been presented to council. Amy was interested
in highlighting one section per article.
C. Study Follow-up: Ruth reported that Marjorie McTaggert called Kathleen
Duff and expressed her concern that there was not much attention paid to
senior women in the study. Marjorie wants to make sure that City Council
and the Coloradoan are aware of this oversight in the study. There will be
letters sent to the Council, Coloradoan, and Commission on the Status of
Women about this. Commission members discussed the possibility of
suggesting that the senior advisory board do a study focused on the status of
seniors in our community. Annmarie added that there were several opinions
in the Coloradoan this past Sunday June 20 on Boards and Commissions.
There has been more discussion on the status of Boards and Commissions and
we may see some changes.
D. Marcile N. Wood Award: No applications are in yet. The proclamation will
be updated. The presentation for Marcile N Wood and Women's Equality
Day will be August 17,1999. Will send out invitations again this year. Will
send around a list for invitations at the July meeting. Invite nominees that
were not selected, as well as, nominator and past Commission members, and
previous award winners. Will have to plan the reception.
E. Legislative: Bobbie passed out a number of copies of legislative items for the
Commissions review. Governor Ownes signed anti crime bills into action.
HB 1250 allows wider community notification of sex offenders, including
juveniles and BB 1115 providing $250,000 in state funding for victims of
domestic violence and an additional $250,000 in state funding to pay for legal
assistance for those victims. Owens vetoed the only pro -gun bill to make it
through the Legislature before Columbine. He also vetoed Library grants.
Colorado is one of only 4 states that don't appropriate state money for public
libraries. Gun legislation, talked about the House vote in Washington and
how it went down in defeat. Five of the six delegates from Colorado voted
against the bill. Highway bill, Owens' sent $2.3 billion highway borrowing
package to the voters. Put it on the ballot for November. Susan mentioned a
book called Fist, Stick, Knife, Gun as a great resource on Juvenile
Delinquency.
F. New Member Orientation: Last year new members were oriented at an
outside meeting. They were given a brief overview of the work of the
commission and the current issues the commission is working on. In the past
0
each new member was given time to introduce themselves at their first
meeting with the Commission. After some discussion it was decided that new
members will be oriented at the July 19' meeting. Annmarie will work with
Joann and Laurie to set this up.
G. Other: The Commission bid a fond farewell to Danielle, Connie and Peggy
and thanked them for their hard work and commitment to the Commission.
The wisdom, energy and enthusiasm each brought to the Commission was
greatly appreciated and we will sincerely miss them all.
