HomeMy WebLinkAboutWomens Commission - Minutes - 10/18/1999Commission on the Status of Women Minutes October 18, 1999 Present: Rita Anastasio, Haemi Cha, Bobbie Gonzales, Lisa Gorham, Lisa Hembloom, Susan Crowe, Annmarie Evans(Chair 223-7957), Sara Lamia. Liaisons: Laurie Fonken-Joseph, City Staff (221-6871) Diane Gregg, Crossroads Safehouse Excused Absences: Joann Ginal, Debbie Tamlin, Tam Frager, Lena Sunthankar I. Call to order: Meeting was called to order 6:10. II. Minutes: Approved as written. III. Review Agenda: Laurie had an announcement Annmarie, Diane and Haemi had announcements under business items. IV. Announcements: A. We have two resignations: Ruth Weatherford and Susan Crowe B. Laurie announced the Soroptimist have requested speakers for their 11/16/99 meeting from 6:30-9:00 at Golden Corral. Annmarie will join Laurie. C. Diane announced a schedule of the different activities happening during Domestic Violence Awareness Month, and passed out Ribbons for all of us to wear. The candlelight vigil is the most powerful event and where they would love the support from the Commission. D. Mail was passed around. V. Business Items A. Multicultural Corporation Report: Bobbie Gonzales. Multicultural Commission is now the Multicultural Corporation of Northern Colorado. The new chair: Barbara Nisen went through all the accomplishments of the Multicultural Commission over the past 5 years. Have changed the format of the report to the community forums held each year. Will have one report to community done by the corporation and then will have each CEO come to a meeting to report on what they are doing in their organization. B. November 15, 1999 meeting: Annmarie talked about the child care provider panel which is scheduled for November 15 in the CIC room in the City Hall. It is important that all members be there. We will invite all council members. Cherie Trine is an in home day care provider. She will gather a panel and Annmarie wants to contact a Children's World, or owners of Seven Oaks Academy, and United Day Care. Encouraged each subcommittee to come up with a couple questions and Annmarie will talk to panel members about the program and the questions we have. Want to focus on local issues and needs. In addition, Annmarie has been trying to reach Karen Weitkunat. Annmarie will follow up with a memo to Karen about the Commission and our past record of attendance. Annmarie will call Coloradoan. Annmarie will contact panel members and give them three specific questions, as well as to let them know they will have 3-5 minutes for introduction. Will allow for questions and answers. C. December Retreat: Enjoyed the activities we did last year. How you got your name, fishbowl with questions, 90 minutes. May have a short meeting, year end summary. D. Other: Haemi reported that Women at Noon has openings for next semester which would be a great opportunity for the Commission to talk about the report. Need to send information to Karen Wedge about the topic and what we will cover, who: description of the commission structure and what Commission on the Status of Women does, description of the presentation... Haemi, Annmarie and Tam will get this information together. Focus on the report. E. 1) Subcommittee Reports: Rita reported on Women's History month. Deadline will be early February and the presentation will be March 21, 2000. Each member of the committee will contact the school English teachers in person to encourage participation, contact principals. Will contact the mall to see if they will cooperate on gift certificates. Will be doing prizes for 3 students of each 7t', 8t' and 9`h grade. Diane will also get a list of women owned businesses in community to see if they were interested in participating as prizes. 2) Child Care Community Outreach: Rita. Decided that responsibility is to review recommendations in report and then to gather information on those recommendations, what is being done in the community and what is not. Will serve in an advisory capacity to city council and let them know what is and is not being done. Rita contacted John Fischbach about child care in new city building. They have not talked in person, but John has offered to do this. Rita will continue to follow up with him. 3) On Site Committee: Lisa G. Reported they will be contacting companies across the country who currently have onsite day care and ask them a series of questions. She will be sending the questions to 60 companies nation wide. McKee (Loveland) has on site day care and they will be contacted as well. Will also send questionnaire to local companies and ask about child care and benefits to employees. 4) P.R. Committee: Annmarie talked about how to get the report distributed. Will do a mailing to Women' groups on Marcile N Wood mailing list. On site committee will take reports with them. Individuals from P.R. will take studies to schools and other service organizations in the community. Will meet with Tam to do introductory letter with information about the report and how to contact us for more information or presentation. Will then P brainstorm on places to take the report in the community. Encouraged all members to take reports with them when they go places. Become very visible with the report. VI.
