SENIOR CITIZEN COMMISSION
Minutes
January 4, 1971
Members Present: Mrs. Stegner, Harry Sobel, Walter Peterson, Dr. Murray
and Mrs. Preble
Minutes: The Minutes were read and approved. Copies had been
mailed to all members but had not been received as yet.
Old Business: Dr. Sobel reported on two items. He had attended a
meeting of the Development Corporation of Neighbor to
Neighbor. They are still in the planning stages and
discussed whether to limit their corporation to housing
or to include business development also. Dr. Sobel suggested
that they concentrate on housing alone. No decision was
made.
The second item was related to the White House Conference
on Aging. There is to be a State White House Conference
in May and the Regional Directors are now planning for
this. There are 6 regions with 12 members from each
region. We are Region 1 and Dr. Sobel is Director.
He has asked the other members if they wish to remain on
the Committee but has not heard from all of them as yet.
He may ask for volunteer from our Commission if he needs
more members. On March 2nd, there will be a meeting in
Greely for Region 1. It is to be by invitation with
certain ratios prescribed for attendance, such as a
certain percentage of aged, youth, etc. There are 14
priority areas, each to be chaired by a regional repre-
sentative. Dr. Sobel is in charge of research. We should
all be tentatively thinking of attending if there is a need.
New Business: Mrs. Stegner suggested that we meet with our Advisory Com-
mittee in order to ascertain their needs and goals for
our Commission for 1971. We could then discuss the White
House Conference with them, get volunteers to attend
the meeting on March 2nd, and find out what they want
for a Senior Citizen Week. We decided to meet February
16th, 10 a.m, at the Friendship Room. We will invite
two people from each senior citizen organization, as well
as Captain Birks and Hank Chavez. Mabel will send letters.
Discussion followed on the possibility of having "Buddy
Cards" made to hand out during Senior Citizen Week. These
are bright yellow cards that are put in the window by the
aged each day if they are all right. If the card is not
up, a neighbor, by pre -arranged planning, checks up.
Important phone numbers are on the back. Mr. Peterson
will find our the cost and ask the Chamber of Commerce
