Tne Fort Collins Advisory Board held a regular meeting on
January 10, 1996 at the Senior Center.

I. CALL TO ORDER:
The meeting was called to order at 11:34 a.m. by Yvonne
Myers, Chair.
II. CITIZEN PARTICIPATION:
There being no others wishing to comment, Phil Kinsella
of Brothers Redevelopment of Denver presented background of
his organization which coordinates Paint-A-Thons statewide.
He gave suggestions and encouragement regarding the
need for 'filling the gap' for painting more seniors' houses
in Fort Collins. He offered his organization's help to a
local coordinator.
There are no regulations against painting modular
houses, trailers, etc., and expertise is available to do
so. Be left a video in which a team paints a stucco/concrete
house and wall.
After Kinsella's presentation, the board discussed the
subject at length. The consensus reached was that SAB will
try to find a coordinator, and it's role will be as it has
in past years, a supporting one. A letter to First National
Bank will let them know that SAB does not wish to compete
with their Paint-A-Thon, but make sure that houses which the
bank does not consider (mobile, modular) will be the goal.
Stan Ulrich and Marjorie McTaggart were appointed to
contact possible coordinating agencies/organizations.
III. CORRESPONDENCE:
Barbara received copies of city boards' work plans for
1996, which are available for SAB members.
IV. OLD BUSINESS:
A. Housing Authority Tour is set for Wednesday, January
31st at p.m.
B. Paint-A-Thon: covered under Citizen Participation.
C. Outreach meetings: 1) 1601 N. College mobile home
park, Fri ay, Fe ruary 17 at 1:30 p.m. 2) Park Lane,
Wednesday, February 15 at 1:30 p.m. 3) CSU class in
April, there. The class will tour the Senior Center
with staff on a separate occasion.
D. Mall transportation update: There has been no
response o either Yvonne's or Fran's letter.
E. Evaluation of Vet -Pet programs No report. Kay absent.-
F. Pioneer mobile home park seniors: No report. Ditto.
G. Prime Time: Stan wrote t�publisher of the
Coloradoan and got an immediate response. Ms Bland
assured him they are interested in seniors and
invited him to the January 19th meeting of the Prime
Time writers.
H. Booth at Mall: After discussion, decisions were made
to have an information booth at the mall on a Satur-
day in May. Yvonne will contact Jill about having it
be a joint venture with the Aspen Club.
I. Dial -A -Ride: No committee meeting report. Jane
commented that some seniors are not happy with vans,
for several reasons. At the chair's request, Jane
will invite Tom Frasier to the February SAB meeting
for an update (at 2:30).
####J. APPROVAL OF MINUTES: There were no corrections. The
December minu es were unanimously approved as written.
V. NEW BUSINESS:
A. Annual Review
regar ing the secretary's start on the 1995 review.
B. Convention & Visitors Bureau budget: Ed Johnson
reported his visit with Rita Green of the CVB, and
provided members with copies of the city resolution
which was passed, and CVB scope of services Seniors
activities that attract outside groups, such as
Senior Games, can get help with housing, tours, etc.
It was agreed that the CVB office should be kept
apprised of Senior events for visitors.
C. Senior dental services: Marjorie reported on the
reactions to her December "Seniors" column which
addressed the dearth of health care for seniors. She
also reported that the Health Care Access Coalition
office will close the end of January. Stan said he
will bring up the subject(s) at the OOA advisory
board meeting.
J. presentation/toast_ not done as Kay was absent.
K. Barbara responded to queries about a recent news
article concerning reactions on aging skin to
chemicals in the center's pool.
VI. SERVICE REPORTS:
A. RSVP: Jennifer reported there are two possibilities
for new sponsorship of RSVP.
B. Aspen Club. No report.
C. City Council: Nothing further to report, per Ed.
D. Seniors Aibrorne: No report.
E. Friends oar Center: Blanche reported they held
a holiday luncheon instead of a December meeting.
F. Office on Aainc: Since regular meeting takes place
the day after SAB meeting, Stan had no report. He
was asked to get more information about the merger
between OOA and Social Services.
G. Senior Center Council: Blanche reported the Center's
Use Policy was discussed at the December meeting.
H. Senior Singles: Fran had no report.
I. Other: Barbara reported that the city will hold a
series of focus groups around users fees for seniors
and invited anyone to participate.
Stan announced that AARP will hold its national
convention in Denver this year. Transportation will
be provided from Fort Collins by the local chapter.
VII. ADJOURNMENT:
The meeting was adjourned at 1:45 p.m.

ANNUAL REVIEW FOR 1995
In addition to overseeing the pre -opening of the new
senior center, activities undertaken by the Senior Advisory
Board, both in and outside of regular meetings in 1995, come
mainly under three overlapping areas: Outreach, Education,
and Communications. Topics within these flowed to and from
the general public, agencies, organizations, caretakers,
seniors, and students.
A. Seniors Outreach: Meetings were held at Rangeview
Adult Community, February; and Northside Aztlan Community
Center (Los Ancianos Unidos), June. A meeting at 1601 No.
College mobile home park scheduled for November was post-
poned at their request.
The Board nominated a senior for Human Relations Award,
Judy Curb. A letter was sent to the Fashion Mall managers
encouraging year-round, indoor transportation for seniors.
A moving company was contacted and agreed to move seniors
from Pioneer Mobile Home Park free of charge.
There were seven presentations pertaining to seniors
made to SAB throughout the year: Senior Job Match; health
issues by Mountain Crest, Western Medical and the Health
Care Access Coalition; para-transit -- Dial -A -Ride; county
agencies' update and plans -- Office on Aging, Department of
Social Services.
B. Communications: Seniors Airborne (SAB's help in
looking for an on -going sponsor); Prime Time and the Seniors
column (Coloradoan); a column about SAB in each Pathways;
printed SAGEnet, a directory of agencies and senior organi-
zations; monthly reports from service agencies, and/or other
senior organizations, including city, county, and state
governments. Each member of SAB is liaison to at least one
other seniors organization.
SAB co -sponsored (with the Office on Aging) a 'network'
luncheon in September at the Senior Center. More than 130
individuals representing over 60 organizations from Fort
Collins, Loveland, and Greeley attended.
A SAB representative was on the local sponsor's Paint-A-
Thon committee. An exchange of letters with the statewide
Paint-A-Thon coordinators about the need for mobile/modular
seniors' houses to be painted (which local sponsor does not
do) led to a presentation scheduled for 1996.
C. Education: Outreach meeting held in conjunction with
a CSU gerontology class; booth at New West Fest; member
participation in City Dialogues; SAB monitored and had input
to para-transit, other transportation, and housing issues.
During construction of the new Senior Center, board -
members took active roles in committees working to get the
new center opened: Library/Audio-Visual, the construction
project on -site meetings, Visual Arts, Landscape/gardens.
Boardmembers also had prominent roles in the opening
ceremonies in June: flag ceremonies, sculpture dedication,
laying of the cornerstone, tours, and entertainment.
Some projects were tabled or abandoned after members
sat on boards, monitored progress and did much research:
Volunteer Credit Exchange; funding for sick pet care; and
the rise and demise of Senior Job Match and Senior Living
Options/Homebounders.
