HomeMy WebLinkAboutSenior Advisory Board - Minutes - 08/12/1998Fort Collins Senior Advisory Board Meeting The regular monthly meeting of this board was held August 12th, 1998 at the Senior Center. Members Present: Members Absent: Guests: Marjorie McTaggart Yvonne Myers Alyce Eckley Jeanne Whetstone Florence Williams Kristin Glenn Blanche Yakmas Fran Ward Eric Margolis Ed Johnson Mae Espeland Kay Rias Ginny Riley Glen Rathgraeber Tim Frazier John Wright City Council Liaison: Ann Azari SUE Barbara Schoenberger Call to Order The meeting was called to order at 2:00 p.m. by Chair Yvonne Myers. Citizen Participation None Correspondence a. Yvonne presented a report from Colorado Operation Trust about Medicare and Medicaid fraud and abuse. b. Members received a copy of the response to our letter to Mike Powers regarding Rolland Moore Park. Approval of Minutes Correction - Kay stated July minutes should have read, "Coalition of Larimer County is trying to establish a criteria that would define affordable housing." Guest Speaker Ginny Riley, Executive Director of Larimer County Human Services, spoke about beneficial changes in this department and the merger of Human Development. Social Services and Office on Aging which have simplified functions of these departments and will benefit clients. Barbara suggested more marketing and putting this information on a website. Marjorie said it would be a good idea to include it on the City Line. Tom Frazier, Supervisor of Transfort spoke of addition of weekend and evening hours to bus schedules. This was accomplished after CSU students voted to increase fees for this added transportation. All Transfort patrons will benefit. He also invited board members to attend a Council meeting that evening (August 12) which will include this topic. John Wright, Acting Supervisor of Dial -a -Ride, said this service will follow suit. Old Business A. Transportation - no report B. Housing - Kay reported the establishment of liaisons to all independent senior housing employees for purposes of receiving complaints, suggestions, etc. She also said the county commissioner needs to deal with senior housing and that a focal person should be in charge. C. City Line - Yvonne reported that one has already been established, but has not been improved and that more information about Senior Advisory Board is needed. Each board member will handle the line for one month. D. Web Page - no report E. Media - Marjorie will write the next Pathways article - subject will be the Hot Line. F. Human Right Ordinance - no report G. Outreach - Yvonne has contacted Marjorie Starrells at CSU about a meeting with students in October. No details at this time. H. Commission on Status of Women - Marjorie read from minutes of their July meeting. She stressed a need for more emphasis on senior women. Yvonne and Marjorie will attend their August meeting on August 17th. I. International Year of Older Persons - Barbara has much information on this. Senior Advisory Board members will receive requests for their participation. National kick-off will be at the UN on October 1, 1998 as will be the local one at the Senior Center. There will be a culmination demonstration in Old Town in October 1999 and an evaluation in November 1999. J. Level and Senior Advisory Board Survey - copies were distributed to members. Yvonne suggested we use their ideas as a format for our Outreach programs. K. Liaisons - TRIAD - Marjorie spoke to members of Big Thompson Police Force at Larimer County Fair. They are unaware of its existence. L. Dollar Value - no reply as yet to the letter Marjorie sent. M. Senior Network Luncheon - Ed has reported that invitations will be sent out in the near future. New Business - Resignation of Ed Johnson A. Members have received a copy of Ed Johnson's resignation. Regarding this: By laws state the vice-presidency must be filled. Marjorie volunteered and was voted in unanimously. B. Marjorie suggested the board send a letter of thanks to Eric Brakke for the left turn arrow at Shields and Raintree. Yvonne will do this. C. Chili Cook -off, a Friend's fundraiser, will be held on October 3rd. Yvonne asked for volunteers to make up a cooking team and she also would like recipes. Barbara requested each board member solicit 40 small items from local businesses to make bags for each cook. D. Senior Advisory Board Photograph - will be taken in September. E. Jeanne Whetstone is Liaison to Youth Board. F. Florence Williams complained of some City services. G. Cemetery Crawl - will be held the last Saturday of September. m - meeting was adjourned at 4:30 p.m. Blanche Yakmas - Acting Secretary approved Aug-27-98 11:30A P.01 • F, To Whom It May Concern: You have been selected to be a facilitator in the upcoming "Bridging The Gap" Senior Networking Luncheon. We believe that your skills as a leader in the community would be valuable to the success of this event. This is an annual event designed to promote a network among members of the community who provide services to seniors, and to become more familiar with other organizations. As a result of this luncheon, we hope that it allows for a more seamless continuum of care for older adults in our community. There will be a number of tables set up at this luncheon and each table will require a facilitator to ensure that the goals of this luncheon are achieved. As a facilitator, you would be responsible for introductions, leading discussion, and management of table organization and clean up. Please return the attached forma We hope to hear from you soon!
