HomeMy WebLinkAboutSenior Advisory Board - Minutes - 10/14/1998Fort Collins Senior Advisory Board Minutes The Fort Collins Senior Advisory Board held a regular meeting on October 14, 1998 at the Senior Center. Members Present: Blanche Yakmas Mae Espeland Florence Williams Fran Ward Marjorie Mc Taggart Yvonne Myers Kristen Glenn Erik Margolis Excused: Alyce Eckley Unexcused• Jeanne Whetstone Staff Present: Barbara Schoenberger Guests Present: Jo Inman Kay Rios City Council Liaison: Ann Azari Meeting was called to order by the chair, Yvonne Myers at 2:10 P.M Citizen Participation: None Correspondence: Yvonne asked for input to fill out the Senior Activities Fiar Evaluation. Passed around invitation to the Bayou Blast at the Women's Center on October 23. Passed around Poudre Health Services District Newsletter. Approval of Minutes: Marjorie made a motion. Blanch seconded it. Minutes were approved unanimously by all 8 members present with the following corrections: 1. New Business — (A) Add Yvonne to the 1999 Work Plan Committee. Guest Speaker: Jo Inman passed around brochures for her business, Lone Pine Estate Services. She has worked in Long Term Care as a Social Worker, and in Admissions and Marketing. She now helps families liquidate all non -titled property, and provides a wide variety of case management services for aging seniors and their families. Old Business: A. Transportation: Florence discussed several issues and passed around some recent newspaper articles. There is an advisory council for Dial -A -Ride which meets the first Thursday of each month. The safety issue at Oak Street Plaza has been fixed. The trash in alleyways will be cleaned up. Kay attended the last Dial -A -Ride Advisory Council meeting. They have received a lot of complaints about reckless driving. Dial -A -Ride will be cutting back on the amount of pickups they do each day by approximately 20-30 people. B. Housing: Kay is now Vice Chair of the Affordable Housing Board. She passed out the address for their website. Senior Attainable Housing Task Force is putting together their work plan and may be asking the SAB for support on several issues. Loveland Senior Advisory Board does a survey on Senior's needs. Kay will try to obtain a copy. Northwood is for sale. C. City Line: (970)493-2489 #628, Kristin has completed the training and has put together a notebook to keep a log of all calls. The number will be listed in the next phone book. D. Web Page: We already have a web page that was put together by the city. SAB members had a chance to view it before the meeting. Erik will try to get the number for City Line added and add that our meetings are open to the public. Will add a second page to list the current projects and upcoming events that the SAB is working on. E. 1999 Work Plan: The work plan committee passed around a rough draft of the 1999 work plan. SAB reviewed the work plan and made several changes. F. Nominations Committee: The nominations committee slate for 1999-2000 is: Marjorie -Chair, Erik - Vice Chair, and Blanche -Secretary. Elections will be held at the November meeting. Nominations are welcome. G. Media: Erik will write an article for the next issue of Pathways. Marjorie passed around an article on the Elder Pet Care Program from the North Forty News. H. Outreach Meetings: Four members will attend the CSU Gerontology class to talk about the SAB on November 17'". I. International Year of the Older Person: Yvonne will chair the committee to organize an event for dignity. Will move the event to October 1999. Now have several other organizations signed up to work together with us on this event. Will hold a meeting November 11", 1:OOPM at the Senior Center. J. "Dollar Value": Kristen reported on "The Service Exchange", a similar program in Longmont. There was some discussion regarding previous attempts to establish a program like this. K. Senior Network Luncheon: Went very well. Will be in Fort Collins next year. SAB will choose a chairperson for next year. Mae will start working on updating the SAGENET mailing list with Christie Brown, Loveland SAB. L. Rolland Moore Park access from Senior Center: They were planning to start construction late Sept. or early Oct. Mae will call and get an update. M. Liaisons 1. OOA: Kay passed out the Affordable Housing Coalition's recommended criteria for Affordable Housing Projects and an Analysis of OOA Advisory Council member's Responses on the OOAAC Questionnaire. 2. RSVP: Kristin discussed several of the programs they are currently working on including: Children and Seniors Together, Volunteer Income Tax Assistance, Shopping Helpers and the Handyman Program. They need volunteers. 3. Aspen Club: They are trying to obtain a machine to screen for osteoporosis. Some HMO's no longer exist putting some people in a bad situation. They will be coordinating the Caring event for IYOP. 4. Foundation on Aging: No report 5. Senior Center Council: Veterans Day breakfast is November 11 at 9:00 AM. 6. TRIAD: Marjorie reported they would not have a meeting in October. Marjorie contacted the Public Info. Officer, Rita Davis to ask how seniors could help. It was suggested that a letter be written to city council. This was passed along at the TRIAD meeting. Gary Everett and Stan Ulrich met with the chief of police and will report to TRIAD and SALT committees. 7. Commission on the Status of Women: No report. 8. Youth Advisory Board: No report. 9. Friends of the Senior Center: Barbara reported the Chili Cookoff went well except they ran out of chili. Had a float in the homecoming parade. Mae was a judge for the parade. Cemetery Crawl was very successful. 10. City Council: Marjorie reports a work session was held on Sept. 22, Councilman mason stated that fees need to be increased. She questioned if this included recreation fees. City Manager Fischback stated that Dial -A -Ride would be allotted a one time $800,000 from the general fund. New Business A. Attendance Policy: Yvonne will discuss this with those board members that are not in compliance with this policy. B. December Meeting: Will have a party for the SAB. All members will bring something for a potluck lunch on December 9 ° at noon. Everyone will dress in red and green. E Other Business A. Marjorie mentioned the Senior Bluebook, which is a great resource for seniors. B. Marjorie reports the Woman's Resource Guide in the Coloradoan did not mention anything about older women. C.
