HomeMy WebLinkAboutSenior Advisory Board - Minutes - 06/29/1988SENIOR ADVISORY COUNCIL BOARD MEETING, JUNE 29TH, 1988. A special meeting of the Senior Advisory Board was called to order at 3 P.M. Wednesday, June 29, 1988, at the Senior Center. Present were: Joe Campanella, Nancy Luttropp, Ruby Lynch, Mildred Arnold, Sam Rosenthal, Yetta Rollin, Ellen Connelly, Arlene Simon and Philip Simon. Absent were: Dwight Saunders and Pat Long. Nancy stated several items concerning the new Senior Center are being considered. She met with several private health club representatives to reassure them that our fitness classes are attended mostly by people who cannot afford private health clubs. If health clubs support the Senior Center we will support their programs for Seniors who can afford them. The new Senior Center is not a dead issue. Nancy senses more commun- ity support. But money from sales taxes continues to be low in collection for projects. Amway approached Nancy with a "Cause Fund" proposal to raise money through catalog sales. The project was submitted to city officials and city attorney for consideration. Results of the recent Senior Center questionnaire statistics were presented by Nancy. The statistics are to be published by various Senior publications. A bridge party benefit is scheduled August 25th at Parkwood Estates at $5.00 per person. This is to be a fund raiser for the Senior Center. Joe asked for and listed the following as Goals and Objectives suggested by board members for the coming year: Health Screening & Health Promotions. Where best to have screenings. Publicize and promote health screenings in a variety of settings. Promote American Cancer Society programs and mammography. Contact legislators - Target insurance coverage for Seniors and needy. Supplemental insurance - perhaps a seminar - long term care. A "Time To Plan" booklet - Sponsorship. Adequate low income housing. Tax concerns. Candidates Forum. Dykwalds Speech. Medicare presentation NHA. Board Visitation Program. Greening Leaf Utilization. Paint-a-thon. Invite other organizations to attend board meetings. Encourage City Council Liaison person to attend board meetings. Nutrition Information - Chef run seminars on low cost/high value commodity cooking/sampling. Quarterly board meetings open to the public. Meeting was adjourned at 5 P. M. Arlene M. Simon, Secretary.
