HomeMy WebLinkAboutSenior Advisory Board - Minutes - 04/12/1989The meeting of the Fort Collins Senior Advisory Board was held on April 12, 1989. Attending the meeting were: Members Advisory Joe Campanella Art Ganung -- Office on Aging Margaret Watts Mike Degner -- Poudre Valley Hospital June Begstrom Barbara Schoenberger - Senior Center Mildred Arnold Ann Azari - City Council Liason Kathleen Jones Kay Rios Yetta Rollin Ellen Connelly Pat Long APPROVAL OF THE MINUTES The minutes of the meeting of March 8, 1989 were approved unanimously. OLD BUSINESS 1. Task Force Seminars -- The Board discussed the intent and the scope of the proposed seminars and workshops and Ann gave a history of its inception. Joe, Barb and Mike are very enthused about the potential of this group. Board members expressed their individual support. Pat felt this was a good way to draw seniors into involvement. The Board agreed unanimously to support the seminars. 2. Joe introduced and welcomed Ann Azari as our council liason. Ann gave her assessment of council/board relationship. 3. Site Committee -- Art passed out a copy of a letter from Susan Pedersen to Mayor Bob Winokur, listing the recommended sites which came from the site committee and asking for a meeting. Ann said that City Council members will be going on a retreat to discuss the Choices 95 and where to go from here. Barb said that Parks and Rec has met with the City Manager and the City plans to keep a site committee but not the existing one. City staff is putting a committee together with basically the same makeup, but not the current membership as it stands. Parks and Rec will also put up a story board at the center to solicit suggestions from seniors. Card responses will be put up on the Board and will then be tallied. The first question is on the preferred site for a new center. Joe expressed concern that the people on the existing site selection committee be included. Skip Noy will apparently be contacting Joe for recommendations. Joe wants a copy of the letter to go with the minutes to Skip and Jean. 4. Lifestyles Fair -- Mike recapped the concept and the basic plans. So far he has nine commercial groups committed. Posters need to be printed and individual groups should be contacted to gain support for the event. Several suggestions were made for contacts. Susan Hellman has been confirmed as a speaker on Medicare/Medigap. Kay will contact SAINT and Caravan for rides the days of the events. Margaret will approach Senior Singles and the First Presbyterian Seniors. Barb will talk to RSVP. Mike is attending and AARP and will solicit their support. Steeles should be contacted to see if they will put flyers in the grocery bags. Mildred and Yetta will come up with additional ideas of where to put posters. 5. Review Guidelines for Board Members -- Joe pointed out the attendance policy and reviewed officer elections requirements and talked about setting up an orientation session for new members. He read the statement on ethics and conflict of interest. 6. Senior Ball -- the event will be on May 19th from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m., with tickets selling for $7.50 per person or $15 per couple. SAINT will provide free transportation and Otto Werner and his group will perform. Barb will bring tickets to the next meeting and would like people to sell them. IZfx:1i:li141i'0*4 . 1. Public Relations Brochure for seniors -- Joe asked Board members to think about putting together a brochure that would push Fort Collins as a place to retire. He would like to approach the Chamber of Commerce about this project. 2. Home Painting Projects -- Pat suggested that 1st Interstate be contacted early so there won't be a last minute rush. The Senior Advisory Board acts as a screening board for this project. There being no further business to discuss, the meeting was adjourned at 4:00 p.m. Submitted by: Kay Rios -2- Fours ation on Aging for `,.:..tuner COLbi ' 305 W. Magnolia Street, Suite 167, Inc. Fort Collins, CO 80521 (303) 221-7441 MEMORANDUM TO: Mayor Bob Winokur Members of City Council FROM: Susan R. Pedersen 50 DATE: April 12, 1989 RE: Update On Site Selection For The New Senior Center The Site Committee came into being as a result of a concern that the city staff was making recommendations regarding the location of the new senior center, without senior involvement. The Site Committee is made up of members of both the Senior Advisory Board and the Senior Center Board as well as one service provider. Below is the current list of sites suggested and reviewed to date. The first three are the current ranking of the committee. 1. FIRST CHRISTIAN CHURCH - Drake and Stover. 2. CSURF - Drake and Shields 3. ROLLAND MOORE PARK - South end bordering on Drake. Additional land just west of Raintree would have to be purchased. The following sites have been suggested and reviewed but have no particular rank by the committee at this time: 4. UNIVERSITY MOTORS - corner of Mason and Mulberry; additional property would have to be purchased for parking. 5. SAFEWAY STORE - Mulberry and College, United Bank owns the property and have recommended demolition rather than renovation. 6. SPRING CREEK PARK - One block south and east of Stuart and College. 7. AVERY PARK - Two blocks south of Taft Hill and W. Elizabeth. 8. LEE MARTINEZ PARK - Suggested by some city staffers to be "thee" location, however, most Site Committee members feel the northern location is undesirable. 9. OLD POWER PLANT - on North College Avenue. 10. JACK RUSSELL PROPERTY - Remington, across from Elks Club. Magnolia Street, Suite 167, Inc. Fort Collins, CO 80521 Mayor Bob Winokur --2 April 12, 1989 11. FORT COLLINS ATHLETIC CLUB - on Racquette Club Drive. 12. WASHINGTON PARK - just north of Old Town. (303) 221-744 13. PRIVATE PROPERTY - east of Putt -Putt on E. Mulberry. 14. EPIC CENTER - just north of current center, fronting on Prospect. 15. BLOCK "31" - jointly owned City and County property, N. Mason. 16. ELKS CLUB - purchase it and land north to existing Senior Center. 17. 363 JEFFERSON - currently housing Larimer County Health and Social Services Building. One other suggestion is the possibility of merging the funds designated for renovation of the downtown swimming pool with the funds for the new senior center. It has been a month since the local election which passed the sales tax funding the capital improvement program. It is necessary that a site for the new senior center be firmed up so that negotiations and plans can be seriously pursued. May we have a planning meeting with members of council and city staff to coordinated our efforts. Please respond by April 26 with a meeting date.
