ADA task force John Austerberry, F.C. police department The minutes from the May meeting were approved with correction. Committee Reports: Ginny DeHerdt reported the facilities/transportation committee is now prioritizing the 109 buildings in the city that need handicap revamping with the monies available. The committee has narrowed the list down to approximately 10-12 buildings that have first priority. The height of signs was discussed (48" vs 51). Mike Gebo stated the City has additional codes along with ADA codes and requirements. He will look into this issue. Denise Scheberle reported she received information from N.O.D. The primary purpose of N.O.D. was to promote awareness. Denise talked with a gentleman from the Coloradoan about featuring a monthly article about handicap accessible businesses as well as information the public and businesses alike would find helpful. A committee was established, Denise Scheberle, Debbie Kalin and Ginny DeHerdt will serve on this committee. Commission on Disability June 8, 1992 Page 2 Ray Sanderson reported the transportation committee will have their report to the City Council by July 21, 1992 and to FTA by July 26, 1992. The next public meeting will be held June 25, 1992, 7:OOpm at City Hall. Ray stated he attended a CASTA meeting in Denver. The consensus of the meeting was a lot of handicap people could be using the bus instead of Care -A -Van, but need to be taught how to. Ray will be attending a two day seminar to learn to teach people how to use public transportation. Shirley mentioned this committee will be utilized by the City when the City purchases new buses. Ray Sanderson reported he and Roy Beachamp made a visit to the bowling alley on South College and Mason. The manager was very receptive. He stated he was working on the parking lot, Roy and Ray pointed out some other problems, but the overall visit was positive and the manager was sensitive to the handicap population. Shirley stated she review PUD plans for new commercial projects in town. 1) Chili's restaurant 2) Best Buy electronic shop 3) Bauder school, additional parking 4) Camera Corner, remodeling She also reviewed plans for: 1) new laundromat 2) dentist office 3) Neighbor Grill 4) Markley Motor K-Mart will be remodeling probably this month. McDonalds just re - striped their parking lot with large handicap spaces. Old Business Mike Gebo said he received a letter from Steve White, City of Fort Collins, that the construction of City Park parking will be delayed until September 1992. New Business: Shirley has arranged for someone from the Poudre Fire Authority to come to the next meeting. The Mayor's Award will be coming in October. A committee was established to start work. The members are, Denise Scheberle and Debbie Kalin. They will start be updating the application and I 0 public service announcements. Commission on Disability June 8, 1992 Page 3 Judy Grim submitted an article that will be distributed with these minutes on the Marriott as a workplace for people with disabilities. A discussion was held regarding the communication between different commission/organizations/boards and the city and public. Debbie Kalin will take to the mayor in the future regarding this issue. John Austerberry, Community Service Officer, mentioned he would be happy to assist the COD with issuing tickets for unauthorized persons parking in the handicap zone. Denise Scheberle mentioned her son's Civics class was required to do community service and a class may be able to help COD in someway.
