HomeMy WebLinkAboutCommission On Disability - Minutes - 06/21/1993t k COMMISSION ON DISABILITY June 21, 1993 Minutes Members Present: Bob Willmot Mike Wilson Angela Bryne James Reigles Roy Beachamp Ray Sanderson Judith Sayre -Grim Shirley Reichenbach Guests: Rita McGill, new member Diane Rehner, new member Robert Gilkerson, ADA Task Force Wendy Irving -Mills, Facilities Members Absent: Arne Andersen, excused Debbie Kalin Staff Liaison: Mike Gebo Council Liaison: Alan Apt Staff Support Present: Mike Gebo Ann Reichert The minutes from the May meeting were approved. Jim Reigles opposed the minutes because there were no committee reports. No committee reports were given in May because time did not permit. The two new members introduced themselves. Debbie Kalin was not present, so there was no report on the letter being drawn up for businesses recognizing them for making their businesses accessible/usable. Doing a survey in the Fort Collins area to identify where disabled people lived, was discussed. New members Rita and Diane formed a committee to explore ways to get a count of disabled people in Fort Collins. New member Diane Rehner discussed with the Commission her idea of having a special COD sticker awarded to businesses that do more than comply with ADA/ANSI standards. Mike Gebo will contact the City attorney to see what limits and liabilities the Commission actually has and if the idea is legal. Rob Gilkerson volunteered to help form a list of criteria that would make a business qualify for this award. It was noted the Boulder library would transfer any written material into Braille. Mike Gebo distributed ANSI standards. He stated he read through them and feels comfortable with the majority of the changes. A committee was established to review the standards in detail. The time line for adopting the standards is September. Shirley stated she is serving on the asked for support from the Commission amendments to include provisions that standards. She to look at changing local would closer resemble ADA. stated she had the support Shirley Reichenbach, Ginny committee to review these Plan Review Committee reported to the Commission they had been meeting and reviewing plans submitted to the Building Inspection Office. Ray Sanderson reported from the Transportation Committee. June loth a training was held and Ray was trained to be a trainer to teach disabled people to ride the bus. A drivers training plan will be established and presented to COD. Wendy Irving updated the Commission on how facilities was coming meeting ADA requirements for City buildings. The meeting was adjourned.
