Debbie Kalin distributed a new draft of a letter proposed to be sent to businesses acknowledging them for making their businesses more accessible to the disabled. The letter was discussed at length and the Commission decided to drop this project. Rita McGill and Dianne Rehmer updated the Commission on the work being done on the survey. Dianne stated they had contacted Nancy Jackson at DRS for additional information. A draft of the survey was given to Commission members to review and the members were encouraged to pass any additional comments on to Dianne. Dianne and Rita will report next month on any changes. Shirley Reichenbach stated Rob Gilkerson attended the Code Review meeting for her, she was in the hospital. Mike Gebo reported to the Commission the outcome of that meeting. Mike stated Chapter 31 dealh with disabilities and the code committee is doing a thorough study of that chapter. He stated the committee also felt 1992 ANSI standards was a good document. The committee will finish their work in the next 3-4 months and that information will go to the Building Review Board and then to City Council. A lengthy discussion was held on what the City can enforce and what are federal guidelines. Shirley Reichenbach stated the ANSI standards and chapter 31 are just minimal standards and she felt Fort Collins should have more stringent codes. Mike explained what laws the Building Inspection Department abide by. The Commission discussed the different departments in the City and what their different responsibilities were. Mike stated generally the Building Inspection office is responsible for the building itself and approximately 2 feet outside the building envelope. Diane Rehmer shared with the Commission about a new group, Association for Community Living. This group's present project is to offer all restaurants in the City menus printed in braille or in large print for a very low price. She asked the Commission if they would support this project. Mike Gebo discussed the purpose of this Commission and how it relates the City Council. The general opinion of members was this project was a good idea, but didn't know how supporting this project as a Commission fits into the goals and mission of the Commission set forth by City Council. Nominations of officers will be held next meeting and elections held in September. October is the annual Mayor's Award. Debbie Kalin offered to get the nomination forms started. Ray Sanderson reported the Transportation Committee discussed that Transport, Care -a -van and Shamrock Taxi need to work more together for a better transportation system for the disabled. Shirley brought up that in the years previous, it was decided not to ticket cars parked in the handicap parking places if they did not display a disabled parking placet. Is it time to start ticketing those people? Mike Gebo stated that is an issue that needs to be discussed with the Council liaison. The meeting was adjourned.
