Commission on Disability Meeting Minutes February 12, 1996 Page Two Discussion of the Executive Summary of the Transit Development Plan A copy of the Executive Summary of the Transit Development Plan was sent with this meeting's agenda to be reviewed by the Commission members. The summary is to be presented to City Council at the February 20th City Council meeting. Members wanted to discuss the Plan and how they could give their support and/or present their comments, on behalf of persons with disabilities, to the Council. It was decided that a letter would be drawn up and sent to the Council members detailing their concerns and suggestions. Kathy will work with Nancy in writing up the letter. Once completed, Ray, as the Chairperson, will be contacted to review and sign the letter on behalf of the Commission. (Copy of letter to be attached.) Some members will be attending the City Council meeting to put forth their comments, suggestions, and concerns. "Changing Perceptions - Victims at Risk" Conference: Tom Brannigan attended the February 5th planning meeting for the conference. Preparations for the conference are moving right along. The conference will be held on June 27 and 28, 1996. The Planning committee asked Tom to ask the members of the Commission to recommend some names of persons who could be contacted to participate in the conference as guest speakers or panelists. Tom needs the names in the next few days so he can give them to the committee. The conference will be covering various topics such as: hate crimes; elder abuse; interviewing elderly, children, disabled; multi -cultural issues; domestic violence by juveniles; general victimization concepts (basic education); victimes and the media; bearing bad news; ADA requirements for victims with disabilities; abuse of persons with disabilities; mental illness issues; homeless issues; etc. Commission on Disability Meeting Minutes February 12, 1996 Page Three "Perspectives" show: Nancy spoke with Mayor Ann Azari about doing a Perspectives show on "disabilities" (i.e. being disabled in Fort Collins). She was very enthusiastic about it and asked Nancy to arrange it with the Cable 27 people. It is the idea of the Commission that this show be done near the time of the HP "Handicapped awareness" day event -- which looks like it will be in September or October of this year. A sub -committee was formed during this meeting to discuss ideas for the show: What topic would we like to focus on? Who to invite to be included in the panel discussion? What kind of `advertising' do we want to do to promote this? etc. The next meeting for the Commission on Disability is scheduled for 2:00 pm on Monday, March 18, 1996 in the CIC Room of the City Hall West Building.
