Blair Leist was recognized and presented with an award for his outstanding service to the Commission on Disability. Blair will be missed and we wish him the best in his new position with the city. Introductions of those in attendance demonstrated the wide cross section of agencies interested in Disability and what is happening in the community to promote awareness and outreach. (page 1) The Commission's Video received very positive comments as well as the review of the Commission's current and ongoing projects. Included in the list of expressed needs and support for the Commission on Disability projects are: • Extended hours and routes for Dial A Ride and bus transportation. • Employment and Careers opportunities for the disabled as well as the matching of skills to jobs. • Information Dissemination. Including hot linking Commission on Disability's web site to other sites and bulletin boards: such as; FirstCall ServiceNet, Access by Design, and FortNet. • Wheel chair friendly housing as well as more affordable housing. • Close caption cable TV of city council meetings, as well as, other public information on cable TV. • Awareness by and education of the general public and government employees, concerning Disability. HP's Partnership Program was sited as an example. • Access Survey concerning: Physical Barriers, Access to Services, and Access to Employment. This meeting was an ogportunitZ for some to announce special events such as:"Day of Caring" September 24 and 25` of September at Library Park and the National Depression Screening Day the 2nd Thursday in October. From the success of this meeting which was to raise support for the Commission on Disability are next meeting will be to analysis and plan the direction to go from here. It is apparent that there is a wealth of information and support in this community, it is a matter of getting the right information to the right people at the right time. The computer and internet do sound like a starting point in the right direction. (page 2)
