HomeMy WebLinkAboutCommission On Disability - Minutes - 08/12/1999L COMMISSION ON DISABILITY MEETING MINUTES AUGUST 12, 1999 Those present at the August 12, 1999 meeting included the following: Allan Apt of COD, Nancy Baker of COD, Laura Burnett of COD, Initha Stuckey of COD, Lila Vizzard of COD, Jean Batchelder of Access by Design, Susie -visitor, Steve Seefeld of City of Fort Collins and Robert Palmer of City of Fort Collins. This meeting began with Jean Batchelder asking the Commission if they would like to become a Local Affiliate of Universal Access (UA) 2000. This would mean that the Commission on Disability would: • Work toward increasing awareness and understanding of the ADA in the community. • Adhere to all ethical standards imposed on the center by the U.S. Department of Education. • Maintain an objective stance relative to ADA implementation, and not provide interpretations of the law. • Periodically prepare a brief report for the RA, summarizing recent UA 2000 activities. • On all materials, include a statement acknowledging the funding support of U.S. Department of Education, National Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation Research. • In all materials, display the national 800 number of the Centers as the primary source of technical assistance on the ADA. The Commission on Disability would receive from DBTAC the following: • ADA materials and information for distribution within the Local Affiliate's community. • Training opportunities to update ADA awareness and understanding. • Administrative support materials and appropriate resource materials including an Operations Manual. • Certain costly resource materials will be availablefor loan to the Local Affiliate. • In general materials are available at no cost. In some cases the materials will be made available to the Local Affiliate at the cost charged to the Center. Lila Vizzard with support, will head up creating a City/Regional Resource Directory. This will require obtaining information from existing directories, such as Latimer County Human Services Directory of Community Services. The second step will be to placing services into a format and summary of services that are helpful to a disabled person unfamiliar with the services of the community. (page 1) , COMMISSION ON DISABILITY MEETING MINUTES AUGUST 12, 1999 It was announced that Easter Seals will be establishing an office for assisted employment in the Fort Collins Area probably in middle of next year. City managers are being invited to a special HP Event concerning employment of the Disabled. This event is currently scheduled for October 6`h. and is being coordinated by Allan Apt. October 22, 1999 we will be working on the nomination of candidates for the Mayor's Awards. David Marckres will begin work on this probably next week. The following boards are being asked to a special Outreach Meeting October 28, 1999. Building Review Board Housing Authority Human Relations Commissions Parks and Recreation Board Planning and Zoning Board Senior Transportation Board Our meeting schedule date change; from the second and fourth Wednesday to second and fourth Thursday is being established through: Ann Corrigan in the City Manager's office and Karla Smith in the City Clerk's office. Ann is working out the meeting locations for each meeting and Karla is changing FortNet to reflect meeting on second and fourth Thursday. Thank you Ann and Karla. (page 2)
