SENIOR ADVISORY BOARD
MINUTES: MEETING OF AUGUST 9, 2000

II. Call to Order: The meeting was called to order by Erik Margolis at 2:00 p.m.
III. Citizen Participation: Tyler Lanham observed the SAB for a summer school civic class
IV. Correspondence: None
V. Approval of the Minutes: Blanche moved that the minutes from the July 12, 2000 meeting be approved.
John Roberts seconded the motion. The motion carried unanimously.
VI. Old Business:
A. Transportation: Florence/Kay
• Construction on the Round -About is scheduled to begin in Oct. with a targeted completion date
in mid January
• City engineers presented to City Council another South Taft Hill Road expansion proposal. City
Council has until August 15, 2000 to respond
• Consultant firms have been hired to study the greater Fort Collins transportation issues
• On August 17`h there will be an Open House at the Senior Center for input regarding
_transportation. There will be focus groups and there is a request for members of SAB to
participate, to discuss routes and other amenities. Florence will represent frequent users and Eric
and Marjorie will represent infrequent users
• Road and rail work began last week on Mason/LaPorte intersections. In about two weeks
construction is anticipated to begin on Mason and Mountain
• On August 26" at the Foothills Fashion Mall the public will be able to view the plan and offer
comments for the Mason Street Transportation Corridor.
• OOA sent a letter to the City Manager recommending NOT to support the increase for Dial -A -
Ride.
B. Outreach:
• Erik reported that there were no meetings scheduled. Erik asked for ideas for upcoming
meetings. Barbara suggested that we meet with other groups. Alyce will check with the Sr.
Center Council and if they are interested perhaps we can participate during their September
meeting.
C. Housing:
• The Northern Hotel project is moving forward
• Committees are being formed to represent seniors to access the colors and accessibility
D. Paint-A-Thon:
• No news with the exception that the Wells Fargo Community Assistance Fund ran an ad in the
newspaper stating that they are committed to work hard to make communities better places to
live and work. We may want to consider contacting them regarding support for the Paint-A-
Thon
E. Discounted Medications:
• George will combine and re -write the news articles related to "free drugs" for seniors, to be
distributed to local senior publications
F. New West Fest:
• Our booth will be located on Walnut across from Goodwill
• A sign up list to man the booth was completed
• Kristen will develop 30 senior trivia questions & answers for the
"gong" show
• John will provide the gong and hammer
• We will have a cooler and ice to hold FlavorIce for the winners of the
trivia questions
• We will be sharing the booth with the ODA , FOA, and Women's Gathering
• John will develop a petition for signatures to be sent to local politicians
G. Chili Cookoff:
• Our theme will be "
• We will wear costumes
• John will bring samples of the chili in next month
• SAB accepted the challenge from the OOA
• We will try to solicit gift certificates from Toddys to pay for
ingredients
H. Senior Networking Luncheon:
• The luncheon will be held on September 29" and the last date to RSVP is September 15"
• The cost is $10.00 per person
• We will share a table with OOA for exhibits
Liaison Reports:
1) FOA: no meeting/no news
2) RSVP:
• Due to reduced staffing in the Nutrition Program RSVP will be
assisting with major projects, devoting extra staff time to helping out
• Upcoming Events:
• Triad: Northern Colorado Senior Safety Fair 8/15, 8:30 to Noon
• Volunteer Celebration Picnics: Thursday 8/31 at the FC SC & Friday,
9/8 at the Chilson Sr. Center
• CAST: Recruitment drive, preparation for tutoring to begin
Sept/Oct
• IMP: 29 volunteers, 13 active —performing essential home safety repairs
for homebound seniors
Grocery Shoppers: 41 volunteers working at Toddy's and Steeles in FC,
and King Soopers in Loveland... shopping for the homebound
3) Ombudsman:
• Senior concerns being addressed by legislators
4) OOA:
• The "outsourcing' study was completed, and the recommendation was not to
outsource
• The City Council & the OOA will determine the "vision"
• They will look at partnering with outside agencies
• A tentative date of 11/11 has been set for "Date With An Angel" sponsored by
Caring Hearts. A location has not been confirmed
5) Alyce reported:
• 7/13 there were 40 players at the pinochle tournament
• 7/28 there were 60 people at the pancake breakfast: OJ, sausage, pancakes and
coffee was served. Volunteers including Alyce started cooking at 5:30a.m
• 8/2 approximately 30 people attended the Sunbird Dinner. Oven fried chicken,
scalloped potatoes, salad, corn bread, home made warm apple pie and ice
cream was served. Larry Lewis played guitar.
VH. New Business:
A. Transfort Study
The Northern Colorado Cross Disabilities Coalition is asking the city for $278,000
to expand Dial -A -Ride services to run later at night and on Sunday. The coalition is
seeking the money through the city's budget exception process. Members of the
coalition say the expanded services would make it easier for them to get around
town. Currently when DAR is not operating, the only options are taxi or a friend.
This is the second time that the coalition's request has been on the exception
"waiting list". The coalition is hopeful that it will be at the top of the list this year.
Recommendation by the city will be made in October.
VIII. Other:
• There were no calls into the City Line
• The Women's-Gathering will be held October 4 ". Bookmarks will be
distributed at the New West Fest
• Marjorie will be having a book signing or her new book, Views From The Far Side of the Hill; Wit
and Wisdom for the Senior Years, on 9/12 from 9-12 noon at the Senior Center. Refreshments will
be served
• Erik advised that the PSD is developing a key communicator network. Kristen
and -June will co -work on this project
Having no other business before us, Marjorie moved to close the meeting. Alyce seconded this. The meeting was
adjourned at 3:50 p.m.
