II. Consideration of the current agenda
III. Citizen Participation: none
IV. Bobcat Ridge Public Improvements:
Mr. Sears presents the project: a 2,600 acre site. It is the first regional natural area; not currently open to the
public. It is a three phase project including a soft trail, hard trail, and cabin with other historical buildings. There is
a corral that will be renovated as a station for the park ranger. I-Eistorically the site was used as a ranch. Then site
includes a parking lot, house, and trail system. Artwork could be incorporated into the shelter, parking lot, or
entrance sign. Ms. Martin states that mini -projects within the Natural Areas Department public improvements
project can be pooled together for one larger APP project. Mr. Sears states that a shelter is needed for the site, and
that a historic aesthetic is requested for its design if it becomes part of the APP project.
Ms. Dale motions to use the Design Consultant Resource List to select an artist for this project.
Mr. Tollison seconds the motion.
Unanimously approved
V. Resevoir Ridge Public Improvements:
Project presented by Mr. Sears: it is an area gifted by the Udall family. Artists were part of the family, and an artist
studio is located on -site. Mr. Sears envisions the studio to be used as a place for meetings; possibly an interpretive
center. It was built in 1950, and has a large deck that can hold 20-30 people. It would also be a good site for art
classes, and school groups to meet. The site is under design now. If needed, Natural Areas will add funds to
subsidize an APP project budget.
Mr Howe motions to use the Design Consultant Resource List to select the artist for the project.
Ms. Carr seconds the motion.
Unanimously approved
VI. Nix Facility Improvements:
Mr. Sears presents the project: it will include the restoration of a loafing shed; and the addition of a new one to
store equipment. New department offices will be on -site within the renovated historic house, or a new office
facility will be constructed. Mr. Moore requests that a similar theme and aesthetic that was used for the Nix Farm
Project with artist Joe McGrane be used for the improvement of this site.
Ms. Carr motions to commission artist Joe McGrane to work on the Na Facility Improvement Project.
Ms. Dale seconds the motion.
Unanimously approved.
VII. Transformer Cabinets Project:
Ms. Martin states that the project used an RFP process to select the artist. Wayne Sterler from the Utilities
Department, a member of the project team is present to support the artist and answer related questions. The
location of the project is in an alley behind the Garment District on College Avenue and Laurel Street. Artist Sandy
Toland states that in the project she uses the word "box" playfully, because the cabinets are boxes, and she
incorporates this theme into the mural. She will use acrylic paint, and a sacrificial (wax based) varnish. The site for
the project was selected by the Department of Light and Power. Ms. Toland states that the project should take
approximately nine weeks to complete.
Ms. Dale motions to accept Sandy Toland as the artist for the Transformer Cabinets Project.
Mr. Howe seconds the motion.
Unanimously approved.
VIII. Huidikoper Park:
Project presented by Herty Bixby. The 8.5 acre site is located next to Lincohi Jr. High School and the Boys and
Girls Club. The site includes a baseball field, soft trail, tennis courts, and shelter. It is a rural site. History of the
site: 24 acres of land was donated by Mr. Huidikoper to build a school. There is currently no theme for the
project. Ms. Bixby requests the use of the Design Consultant Resource List. Funds may be added from the Parks
Department to the APP budget if needed.
Ms. Hixon-Cunningham motions to use the Design Consultant Resource List to select the artist for the project.
Ms. Carr seconds the motion.
Unanimously accepted.
IX. Provincetowne Park
Project presented by Matt Day from the Parks Planning Department. This project will not begin until late this
year, and the name of the location will change. It is a six acre site between College and Lemay, south of Trilby.
The site is next to a natural area Design will begin at the end of the year. Themes for the project will involve
community input.
Mr. Howe motions to use the Design Consultant Resource List to select an artist for the project.
Ms. Hixon-Cunningham seconds the motion.
Unanimously approved.
X. Staff Reports:
Ms. Martin updates the Board on current APP projects.
Ms. Martin also presents a concept for a memorial bench submitted by artist Joe McGrane. This is a very early
stage in the program, and no specific parameters have been determined for the scope of the project yet. The
memorial bench would be a component of the Memorial Catalogue. The concept can be applied to living
memorials; not strictly for the deceased.
