Support Suprv. — Recreation Division Guest(s) Present: Max Swanson Call Meeting to Order: The meeting was called to order by chairperson Brendon Votipka at 7:05 p.m. Approval of Minutes from March 2, 2005 The minutes of the regular meeting on March 2, 2005 were unanimously (7-0) approved following a motion by David Saperstone and seconded by Kristi Thomas. Agenda Review: No changes to the printed agenda. Citizen Participation: No citizen participation. Agenda: CHILDREN'S LEADERSHIP INSTITUTE Mark Hoog presented his conceptual plan to promote personal growth and leadership in young people. His plan is to recruit high school age kids to act as mentors for children in grades kindergarten through 61h. He currently has "buy in" from Mayor Martinez and plans to present his concept to the Larimer County Commissioners. Mr. Hoog wanted input from the Youth Advisory Board on execution of his idea — what would implementing the concept look like? Mr. Hoog would like local businesses to provide incentives for high school students to participate. Following a motion by Cara Getches and seconded by Kristi Thomas, the Board voted unanimously to draft a letter supporting the concept. SUB -COMMITTEE REPORTS The sub -committee researching the possibility of having a coin war as a fundraiser for the Inspiration Playground didn't get support from the local high schools, so that plan was scrapped. Poudre High School, however, will be having a car wash with proceeds designated for the playground project. Youth Advisory Board Minutes April 6, 2005 Page 2 Brendon Votipka, who will be graduating and leaving the Board, encouraged remaining Board members to continue their support of this project until its completion. Brownie McGraw is the contact if any Board members wish to get further involved. YOUTH ACTIVITY CENTER UPDATE/FUND-RAISING Dave Mosnik reported that there will be a job fair on April 21 at the Mariott from 3:30-6:30 specifically for youth employment. The recent Job Guy workshop went well with instructor Lee Swanson teaching teens how to stack the odds in their favor to get the job they want. Kristie Blackmon's after -school activities are going well. The dance on Friday, April 1 was attended by about 50 kids. Board members were asked to distributed flyers to their respective schools to publicize the upcoming Battle of the Bands on April 16. NORTHSIDE AZTLAN COMMUNITY CENTER UPDATE A 3-on-3 basketball tournament was held during Spring Break. Two open houses were held on March 30 for interested people to comment on the conceptual design of the new Northside Aztlan Community Center. OTHER BUSINESS * April 19 is free cone day at Ben & Jerry's from Noon-8:00 p.m. Tips will go to the non-profit Suicide Resource Center.
