The June 8, 2005 Senior Advisory Board meeting was held at Oakbrook I, 3200
Stanford Road, Community Room.
Call Meeting to Order:
Chairperson Dianne Heath called the meeting to order at 1:32 p.m. A quorum was
present.
II. Dianne Heath made a presentation to the residents of Oakbrook I and other members of
the public in attendance about the purpose of the Senior Advisory Board, their priorities,
and a representation of the projects that they have been involved.
III. Public Participation:
• Oakbrook residents and SAB members introduced themselves.
• Kay Rios, representing Catholic Charities Northern Caring Hearts, asked for support
from the Senior Advisory Board for the 3 a Annual Walk-a-Thon by pledging money or
by sponsoring a participant in the walk. Brochures were distributed.
• Mary Jane Warfield thanked the Senior Center staff for being so kind.
• Dorothy Nickolson expressed concern about affordable housing for people moving to
Fort Collins and inquired if the Senior Advisory Board works with housing issues.
Barbara Schoenberger replied for the Board stating that the work plan for the past 12
years had stated the first priority was transportation and the second priority has always
been affordable housing. SAB has worked hard with the City and other groups to
continue to find ways to provide affordable housing for seniors. Also, as part of their
recommendations for the 2006-2007 City budget, the SAB recommended no cuts be
made in affordable housing.
• Dianne explained B.O.B. (Building on Basics) and that the Senior Advisory Board has
actively advocated the expansion of the Senior Center as part of the proposal. Bud Herin
encouraged the residents to call their Council representative.
• Rick Price announced that June is Bike Month. Rick asked why the Senior Center
doesn't offer any bike rides on the wonderful trails that the City offers. Barbara
Schoenberger replied that endeavors to create bike programs have been unsuccessful due
to lack of registration. Fees must be charged to cover costs of the program. Rick asked if
the Center would work with them if they were able to secure volunteers to organize such
a program. Barbara responded that the staff would be pleased to work with the group.
• Dottie Hall asked what the age is to use the Senior Center. Barbara Schoenberger replied
that users (generally) must be 18 years of age and older. Additionally, members must
also be 18 and older. Senior memberships begin at 50 years of age and have special
privileges.
IV. Approval of Minutes
Jeanette Namuth made a motion to accept the May minutes as corrected. Bud Herin
seconded the motion. The motion carried.
V. Correspondence:
A. Copy of letter written for the Senior Advisory Board by then chair, Mike Richardson to City
Council identifying the Board priorities for Building on Basics letters submitted in fall 2004 to City
Council from Senior Advisory Board members, Bud Herin, Marjorie McTaggart, Dean Miller; copy
letter submitted by Bud Herin for SAB to Council on May 26, 2005 concerning BOB; copies of
petitions submitted to City Council for Senior Center expansion were placed in each members' file.
B. Corrected roster of 2005 Senior Advisory Board placed in members' file.
C. Mailing received from the North I-25 Project Team (EIS) and invited members to attend an oper
house: Thursday, June 16 from 4 — 7 p.m. at the Lincoln Center.
D. Bill received from Wilcox Beverage for service at the Wine and Cheese Social in May. Each
member agreed to pay $15.00 toward the charges.
VI. Old Business
A. BOB (Building on Basics) - Bud Herin reported on the status of BOB and the Board's
endeavor to have the expansion of the Senior Center included in the package.
Supporters have been asked to address Council on July 5 and Council will have a
study session on July 121h for BOB. A decision will have to be made before August
8 h. Dianne Heath expressed how very important it is for people, besides SAB, to let
Council know how they feel. Costs will be minimal to operate the addition and
should respond to the current need for reduction in costs for City services.
B. Bridging the Gap - Jeanette Namuth reported that the committee had selected All
Occasions Catering and had decided on a salad bar. The next meeting will be held on
Wed., June 15'h at 12 p.m. at the Senior Center. The committee plans to finalize the
program and speaker at that meeting.
C. Development plan for property located on Shields and Raintree for Home State Bank
— Bud Herin reported that he had received a notice for the public hearing on the
development plan for the property on Shields and Raintree. Following a discussion of
the plan, the Board was fearful that there could be many dangers in sharing the
parking lot with Home State Bank as well as concerns about additional traffic in to
the lot. They believe that this might also present a danger due to the large number of
pedestrians who cross the main entrance. Don Wells agreed to attend the hearing and
made a motion to present opposition to using the Senior Center's parking lot as a
thoroughfare. Marjorie McTaggart seconded the motion. The motion passed
unanimously. Don will present these concerns at the hearing.
D. Review of the 2005 Work Plan is planned for the July meeting.
VII. New Business/Liaison Reports
A. Marjorie McTaggart reported that the VOA is implementing their program, Cool
Down Colorado, which provides fans to needy seniors. They are asking for names of
people that might need a fan and doesn't have air conditioning.
B. Marjorie McTaggart also reported that TRIAD is still working on reorganization.
C. Marjorie also reported that the City of Fort Collins Commission on Status of Women
has changed their name to be the Women's Commission.
D. Barbara Schoenberger reported that Channel 27 is airing the first "Life Goes On"
program that deals with seniors in Larimer County. Marjorie McTaggart is the
selected senior to be showcased this month.
E. Bud Herin reported that he met with the Mayor and spoke about the Senior Center.
The Mayor seemed very sympathetic to our concerns. They agreed that some of the
projects on BOB should be an on -going maintenance item and not a capital project.
Bud brought up the possibility of matching grants for the senior center expansion
project. The Mayor thought that was a good idea. Bud reminded him that in order to
get these funds, you need money to match.
F. Don Wells suggest writing a thank you note to the Mayor and his wife for coming to
the Wine and Cheese social. Secretary Marjorie McTaggart will write the note on
behalf of the Board.
Executive meeting will be held at Dianne's office on Wed. the 29`h at 3p.m.
II. Adjourn
Heather Heafer made a motion to adjourn the meeting, Bud Herin seconded the motion.
Motion was carried.
