HomeMy WebLinkAbout2004 - Library Board - Annual ReportFort Collins Public Library Board 2004 Annual Report 1. 2004 Goal: Explore options for providing key library services in underserved sectors of the City (e.g. SE sector). Results: A. The Board explored the possibility of and current thinking about sharing space with schools to expand services. B. The Board is actively pursuing an agreement for a new southeast location at the Lifestyles Center. 2. 2004 Goal: Examine funding models and philosophies from other Library systems across the country. Results: A. Libraries in locations where library services are treated as essential community services enjoy the most beneficial funding. B. Libraries where patrons share proportionately in providing funding seem to thrive more than libraries that are funded exclusively through property taxation. C. An active project to investigate possible "county -inclusive" funding models has been ongoing under the guidance of the City Manager, Darin Atteberry, and Marty Heffernan. 3. 2004 Goal: Library Support Organizations —The Board will partner with the Friends of the Library and the Library Trust to further enhance the Library, and coordinate activities and goals. Results: A. Major funding in support of elective programs was provided by the Friends of the Library, legacies and bequests, and the Library Trust. 4. 2004 Goal: Emerging Library Trends —The Library Board has learned about numerous national issues that affect libraries, and also are working with staff to ensure that the local library system is aware and proactive in dealing with these issues. Results: A. As a quarterly agenda item, the Board monitors changes in law that apply to the operation of the Library, including but not limited to intellectual freedom, data privacy, Internet filtering, and the Patriot Act. The Board supports the right of all citizens to free access to information. 5. 2004 Goal: Continue to learn about the functioning of the Library system. The Board will receive presentations from library staff from various departments so the Board is current on the functioning of the Library. Results: A. A review of all of the services and programs offered by the Library was part of the agenda for each Board meeting during 2004. B. Department heads and staff familiarized the Board with operations and services (as well as needs) during informative presentations. 1/13/05
