HomeMy WebLinkAboutCommission On Disability - Minutes - 05/25/2000COMMISSION ON DISABILITIES MEETING MINUTES MAY 25, 2000 Members present: Alan Apt, Nancy Baker, Mark Beck, Don Fish, Kathryn Johnson, David Marckres, Robert Palmer, Initha Stuckey and Lila Vizzard Guests present: Gary Dennison and Joe Frye from Vaught -Frye Architecture, Karen Gerard from Funding Partners for Housing Solutions and Felix Lee and Mike Gebo from the Building and Zoning Department of Fort Collins The meeting was brought to order by Mark Kramer. Felix Lee started the presentation on the restoration of the old Northern Hotel. He stated that all the guests asked to speak before the Commission for our input on the restoration. He said that the Fair Housing Act and state regulations for rehabilitation don't apply to existing buildings, like the Northern. Mr. Lee supports the current plan and turned over the discussion to Joe Fry to further explain the restoration. He stated that funding was the key to the plan and that it was the main determinate in the restoration. Next, Karen Gerard told us that the property had been partially condemned since 1975 when there was a fire there. The current owners bought it November 1999 and that they are committed to a quality project. Also, she stated that the financing and historical preservation requirements were very constrictive. Gary Dennison showed us the plan for the rehabilitation. They are going to build seven units that are Type A (completely accessible). One of these seven will be for the blind and the hearing impaired. Twenty more will be Type B that conforms to clearance requirements for the disabled. The last twenty will be non -adaptable. COD5.25.00 Page 2 of 3 Mark Beck gave us an update on his visitability project. He met with Kimberly Stenberg (Home Builders Association of northern Colorado, Inc.) and he ordered a video from Eleanor Smith (Director of Concrete Change) that discusses points of visitability. Kathryn Johnson gave us an update on several issues. First, the letter and packet to the Mayor, requesting a signer for the city's public business discussions, has been sent. She is requesting a meeting with the Mayor to discuss these issues. Next, she told us about the information that she is gathering about the advances being made in pedestrian safety in California.
