HomeMy WebLinkAboutCommission On Disability - Minutes - 01/09/2003COMMISSION ON DISABILITY Regular Meeting Minutes January 9, 2003 Operation Services Center Members present Jill Lancaster, Ruth Bell Skogerboe, Paul Ostrof, Elizabeth Kelly, Jerry Patterson, Laura Burnett, Diane Dittos, Susan Williams. City stab. Rachel Palmer, Tracy Oschner Guests: Michelle Rogers, Art Show sub -committee member Laura called the meeting to order at 12:20 pm. Laura welcomed Elizabeth Kelly as the newest member of the COD. Minutes approved. Passed unanimously. Motion made by Paul and seconded by Susan. Sub Committee Reports Practical Housing — Paul brought a copy of the `Builder's Guide" that the PHA sub -committee developed. Five hundred copies will be available for those interested —.builders and homebuyers. Distribution will likely happen through the building permit office. Ruth suggested that copies also go to realtors. Susan suggested that PHA get a photograph of a disabled individual (s) and others outside an expensive, newly constructed home with a caption, "No way in," showing the barriers. Mayor's Awards — The COD is waiting for a proposal from the BLN. Art Show — Brochures and cover letter for Art Show will go out this week. Tracy is still working through the fee issue. An insert was included in the January utilities billing. Susan said she has gotten calls from the insert as well as the announcement in the paper. Accessible Technology — Susan and Michelle indicated that they can't figure out how to check out library books on-line with the new changes that have been made. Jerry will look into it. Budget — Jerry will talk to Marty Tharp about a procedure for budgeting for COD programs. There was a suggestion to invite a City Manager's office representative to a future meeting. The following sub -committees should get a rough estimate of costs for the year for their projects to Jerry before the next meeting: PHA, Art Show, Heavy Doors. 2003 Work Plan Ruth indicated that the Multi -Cultural Commission, of which she is the liaison, does not exist. She will still serve as the liaison to the Cultural Resources Board. Ruth would like to be added as the liaison to Art in Public Places. Action: Jill will send a new Addendum A to the COD with the above changes noted. Comments from Marty on work plan: "This group is organized and well -run." Annual Report Mark provided an executive summary to the annual report. New Business Accessibility Issues: Buffalo Run apartments need improvements to their curb cuts. West Drake at the vet hospital — no sidewalk. Resources — The COD should put together a booklet of "resources" for the disabled or find if something like this already exists. For instance, where to go to get help. Ruth will spearhead the effort.
