REPORT ON YOUTH SUMMIT IN ESTES PARK Adrienne Pickett, Ashley Stephenson and Ryann Peats attended the youth summit in Estes Park in October where they identified two topics that they felt the Youth Advisory Board should work on. Those were transportation and trust issues. As a result of their discussion, it was decided Youth Advisory Board Minutes November 5, 2003 Page 2 that the youth would like to have representation on the City's transportation board. Another idea was to host trust workshops. The Fort Collins representatives to the summit reported that Fort Collins is way ahead of other municipalities in terms of things for teens (YAC, skate parks were 2 examples). YAB representatives indicated an interest in having a joint meeting with Loveland's youth board and possibly schedule a second unofficial Youth Advisory Board meeting each month. REPORT ON INSPIRATIONAL PARK COMMITTEE MEETING Abby Zier and Brendon Votipka attended the recent meeting of the park planning committee. The group is in the process of seeking corporate sponsorships, and other fund-raising efforts are being pursued. It was suggested that perhaps the schools could compete in a fund-raising challenge. Perhaps a letter could be drafted to student councils seeking their support. Publicity materials are being produced by the committee to help with the fund-raising. Brendon suggested forming a sub -committee of YAB members to work on fund-raising. Abby, Jonathan and Amy will join him on the committee. WORK PLAN The 2004 work plan was revised as follows: • Create awareness of opportunities for teens. • Explore teen/adult trust issues. • Investigate transportation issues. Perhaps have YAB representation on transportation board. • Provide input on Northside Aztlan Community Center replacement project. • Become involved in the community effort to create a universally accessible playground (inspirational park). A motion was made by Ashley and seconded by Adrienne to have sub -committee meetings on the 3'd Wednesday of each month at 7:00 at the YAC. It was approved unanimously (7-0). The first sub -committee meeting will be held December 17. YOUTH ACTIVITY CENTER UPDATE/FUND-RAISING Sunday family hours (noon-6:00 PM) have been well -attended. The climbing wall is getting more use, and a new program has been added "Afternoons at the YAC". The November calendar and newsletter were distributed. A bowl-a-thon is scheduled to be held November 15 as a fund-raiser for the gymnasium. The minimum donation per person is $25. A recent grant was received from Anheuser-Busch for $50,000, bringing the total to $600,000 of the $750,000 that is needed. November 13 is the date for the next youth team fund-raising committee's meeting; over $12,000 has been raised by this group to date. Youth Advisory Board Minutes November 5, 2003 Page 3 NORTHSIDE AZTLAN COMMUNITY CENTER UPDATE Susy Lagradilla from the Northside Aztlan Community Center reported that funds for the Toys for Kids program are down about 30%, so additional contributions are desperately needed. December 6 is the wrapping party from 8:00-11:00 AM; Christmas parties for ages 3-12 are scheduled for December 13.
