Call Meeting to Order: Chairperson, Mike Buderus, called the meeting to order at 1:40 p.m. This was a special outreach meeting held at the Parklane Towers. SAB members introduced themselves. II. Approval of Minutes: Mike Buderus made an addition to the June minutes, Marjorie Joy did the presentation instead of Mary Waring from North Front Range Metropolitan Planning Organization. John Roberts made a motion to accept the minutes, Mike Richardson seconded the motion. The motion was passed III. Citizen Participation: Mike Buderus explained the role of the Senior Advisory Board is to take concerns forward to City Council. Mike talked about the accomplishments of the Senior Advisory Board. Residents remarked that Dial -A -Ride was very dependable and a good program. It greatly enhanced the lives of many residents at Parklane. One concern expressed was expressed by resident, Toni McGuire, which concerned the homeless situation and that some were using the facility as a refuge. Parklane has a committee looking into the incidents to give report to the police. Mike Richardson asked for a copy of report be give to the Senior Advisory Board. Senior Advisory Board will follow up. IV. Correspondence: V New Business: A. Election of Officers — Mike Buderus — Chairperson Mike Richardson — Vice Chair Dean Miller - Secretary V. Old Business: A. Presentation by Mayor Martinez at August 131h meeting. The Mayor will be giving the state of city and would like the Senior Advisory Board to invite the public. The presentation will last 30 to 40 minutes with a question and answer period. The Senior Advisory Board will have a brief meeting afterwards. Posters will be posted at the senior center along with an article in the Coloradoan. B. Outreach meeting schedule ❖ September 10`h will be at the Parkwood Estates. A meeting with the residents will be at 11:00 a.m. followed by lunch at 12:30p.m. ❖ October 81h SAB will meet with the Senior Council at 12p.m. starting with lunch and a meeting following. ❖ November - Eileen will look into a meeting with an Aspen Advisory Group. ❖ December — Annual party hosted by the Chairperson. C. Bridging the Gap — Jim Downey — Letter has been issued to invite various groups. This years theme will provide information on the current financial climate. The speaker will be Jim Reisberg. D. Letter sent to the City (Mayor Martinez) by Jim Downey on behalf of the SAB expressing concern with the crosswalks by the Foothills Mall. Mayor Martinez wrote back thanking the SAB board for writing the letter and forwarded it to the City Manager. The City Manager also wrote back thanking for the concern and taking action. Two crosswalks will be put in. E. Thumbs Up sent to thank City for prompt response to the need for a crosswalk on Mason near Parklane. F. 211 — Jim Downey will try to get magnets to distribute at the Homecoming Parade. G. Chili Cookoff Team — A lead person will be chosen later. H. 2003 Work Plan review — Mike explained the work plan. VI. Liaison Reports 1. Jim Downey — August 9`h will be next meeting for Bridging the Gap. 2. Aspen Club —Eileen Hendee— Rally at the Fort is this Saturday at the CSU Oval. Proceeds go to the Heart Aware Program. The annual event is sponsored by the Attack Pac, community members who have overcome heart disease. Aspen Club Medicare counselors will be trained this fall on any changes that might come of the current redesigning of Medicare. The Aspen Club will then sponsor educational classes for community members. Aspen Club is offering a two-day workshop to introduce participants to the healing art of Qigong on August 7`h and 8`h. Qigong is a holistic method of helping the body return to its natural state of good health. The workshop, to be held at the Lincoln Center, will be from 9:OOa.m. — 12:30 p.m. and costs $25.00. 3. John Roberts — Red Cross building burned down caused by an electrical fire, they have moved classes to Harmony Presbyterian Church. 4. Mike Buderus — Mike and Eileen will meet with City Council to participate in the Senior Center Board Review. 5. LCOOA — Dean Miller — The Nutrition Committee meets every two weeks with the newly formed Senior Nutrition Assistance Project (SNAP). SNAP was formed in light of the anticipated loss of county monies for Senior Nutrition Programs. The goal of SNAP is to provide funding for the senior nutrition programs through additional fund raising. It was reported that the Fort Collins Meals on Wheels is running into funding issues. OOA staff has completed the application process for a part-time ombudsman. The ombudsman Program presently has 7 volunteers. The Larimer County Workforce Center is sponsoring the "Living Your Dream, and Enhancing Work and Life after 50" conference. Friday, August 17, 7:30 a.m. to 2p.m. at the Marriott, located behind the Foothills Mall. 6. VOA/SNP & RSVP — Dean Miller — Meeting with Leighanna Grupp and Julie Hartman. There has been and there continues to be a gradual and steady decline starting in the 1970's in the SNP throughout the nation starting in the 1970's. Younger seniors are not participating in the program. Requests for salad bars, foods low in fats, especially saturated fats, and whole wheat bread along with other nutritional foods are not feasible or economical at this time. Congregate meals are gradually losing support. President Bush has been pushing for an increase in some form of delivering meals to the homes of participants. RSVP) continues to provide opportunities to volunteer in over 75 agencies in Larimer County. Approximately 1000 people have been volunteering. Tri-Ethnic Center — Dean Miller — Dean will be discussing with Dr. Ruth Edward research possibilities to: 1. Determine if three strategies for approaching and mitigating the effects of aging can be used to describe the way people actually respond to aging. 2. Study the extent that denial affects the way individuals deal with and/or plan for changes that occur as we become older. Ruth believes their research based on the "Community Readiness Model" can be used to assess readiness (and denial) in being proactive in learning about the many opportunities becoming older provides us. 3. Do labels and descriptive terms and phrases, such as aging, seniors, Golden Years, retirees, spirituality, Sageing and Senior Centers have a positive, negative or no affect on perceptions of people we hope to attract or entice to become participants with people who are chronologically older? As there alternatives that may be both attractive and meaningful to people who vary considerably in terms of chronological age? 7. Larimer County Senior Network —Mike Buderus —Meeting July 11, 11:30a.m. to 1:OOp.m. The topic is "Advocating for Individuals Long-term Care Setting" Donna Brumbaugh, Long Term Care Ombudsman for the Larimer County Office on Aging will be speaking about how we all can advocate for residents in long term care facilities and how to empower residents to continue advocating for themselves.
