HomeMy WebLinkAboutWomens Commission - Minutes - 04/18/2002Commission on the Status of Women • Minutes April 2002 Present Sara Lamia, Annmarie Izuel Evans Alison Johnston JeanWyrick Liaisons Diane Heath Senior Advisory Board, Barbara Catbagan Spalding City Excused Absent Deb Thompson Hanne Cha Kristen Chatnam Kara Lyons Absent I Call to Order 6 00 II Mmutes approved Annmarie moved to approve Alison seconded Approved III Review Agenda Agenda revised to accommodate Diane Heath presentation IV Announcements none V Business Items A Diane Heath Jean introduced Diane She spoke about the role of Senior Advisory Board and asked about joining forces to highlight the importance of the senior women in Fort Collins They would like someone to work with from CSW to brainstorm ideas She explained about the Senior Cntr being owned by the City and is supposed to be self sustaining which means that seniors pay for programs Diane explained that 2 staff persons who are paid by City Parks and Rec and the others are volunteers SAB wants to get word out about the needs of senior women A goal is to get past the stereotype that the seniors in FC are all affluent There are many 60 85 year olds who are not affluent are not able to use Senior Cntr because of cost There is a minunun $12 per person/per year fee to belong to Senior Cntr The fee gives access to get in door attend monthly buthday party free movie nights drop in to play cards ---everything else has an additional fee —pool to swim play pool use exercise equipment Website aldiheath(a,aol com • send email to find out about how to get on webpage for seniors B Essay Contest Suggestions Notes and Questions for 2003 Jean had typed up the notes Questions were addressed Start process with Tom Tonoli in Sept /Oct Keep same topic9 Change to historical figures9 Make an option9 Use both topics alternately Include the high schools9 Yes because it was their first year and worth another chance for more participation Revise the scoring guide9 Discussion Just tell them what they re looking for on the flyer because we re not an educational group gives us more accountability to have a guide guide was not sent to schools except if it was asked for essays chosen were chosen because they said what they said well by the way they wrote Encourage more teachers to participate9 We hope to do that Find a more organized way to contact all teachers Contact Cathy Kamer to find out if they still put out list of essay contests Emphasize the necessity of putting grade teacher school etc on the cover sheet Good to start at 7PM9 Yes Give several awards to each grade of Junior high even if we do include high schools9 Yes Winner and honorable mentions —more awards less money9 How can we schedule our work load so that the contest and the Wood Award do not overlap9 Do we need to contact the subject of the essay9 No put it in the letter to the winner to contact the person Do we need a chair for the committee9 Yes The committee should share the work load of the essay contest letter writing certificates contacting winners revising the rubric etc C Marcile Wood send out application in Sept Deadline Nov 15`" Between Nov and Dec CSW reads them January contact Wm s Cntr with information More on this in May VI Adjourn 8 00 PM •
