Support Suprv. — Recreation Division Guest(s) Present: Jim Campain, Jennifer Shock, Karen Dike Call Meeting to Order: The regular meeting of the Youth Advisory Board was called to order by vice -chairperson Ana Rocca at 7:15 p.m. Approval of Minutes: On a motion by Mera Geis and seconded by Robbie Weisser, the minutes of the regular meeting of February 7, 2001 were approved unanimously (4-0). Agenda Review: Jim Campain will meet with Board members as a focus group following the adjournment of the meeting. Citizen Participation: Agenda: No citizen participation. YOUTH POLICE ACADEMY Police officer Eric Sachs presented information on a Youth Police Academy that will be conducted by the police department the latter part of June. The objective of the academy is to create open dialogue between youth and the police department and to give a better understanding of the laws and what it is that cops do. The academy is open to Poudre School District students only who have a GPA of 2.5 or better and who maintain good citizenship. A letter of recommendation from a counselor or teacher is also required. Youth Advisory Board Minutes April 4, 2001 Page 2 Two one -week academies will be held in late June with 25 kids, currently in grades 8-11, per session. Applications will be distributed through the schools; publicity will be through announcements and posters. Graduation will take place at the end of each academy with a slide show and parents in attendance. PERIODIC REVIEW QUESTIONNAIRE The Board spent some time forming answers to the questions on the Periodic Review Questionnaire. TELEVISION SHOW UPDATE The next show is scheduled to tape on May 3. In keeping with May being National Mental Health Month and Suicide Prevention Week, depression and suicide will be discussed by school counselor(s), a psychologist, and others. Mera Geis will host. The Suicide Resource Center will be consulted for input. Interested Board members will meet on April 22 at 2:00 to plan the show. YOUTH ACTIVITY CENTER REPLACEMENT TASK FORCE UPDATE Ana got a letter from Mayor Martinez saying "thank you" for the Board's input and that City Manager John Fischbach will be contacting the Board with more information. Adam Forest of Poudre High School will attend the City Council meeting on April 17 where he will present 700 letters signed by PSD students who support replacement of the YAC. Board members are welcome to attend as well. NORTHSIDE AZTLAN COMMUNITY CENTER UPDATE Spring Break was busy. Some of the wrestlers went to a tournament last week. The half - pipe was completed and is reputed to be the best in the state. The skateboard competition that was scheduled in March was snowed out for two consecutive weeks and has not been rescheduled. The cost was $30,000 to install and was funded through the City and the school district. YOUTH ACTIVITY CENTER UPDATE Spring Break was extremely busy with lots of girls playing basketball. Two new pool tables have been purchased for Teen Alley. A teen -initiated pool league has been formed for Saturday afternoons. The upcoming laser tag lock -in and ski trip are both nearly full. Staff is excited about the potential new location for the Youth Activity Center even though it is unknown at this time. OTHER BUSINESS • Peggy distributed applications for open Board positions. The application deadline is unknown. Youth Advisory Boar :inutes April 4, 2001 Page 3 • A lady by the name of Kara Gan called Mera Geis with the hopes of setting up an interview with Board members the evening of April 19 to get feedback from teens about guns in schools and what they would do if they heard about a planned attack.
