Call Meeting to Order: The regular meeting of the Youth Advisory Board was called
to order by Chairperson Ana Rocca at 7:05 p.m.
Approval of Minutes: On a motion by Mera Geis and seconded by Amy Flug, the
minutes from February 6, 2002 were unanimously approved (5-0).
Agenda Review: No changes to agenda.
Citizen Participation: No citizen participation.

FOLLOW-UP ON LETTER TO COUNCIL RE: SECONDHAND SMOKE
Copies of the letter that was drafted by Board members and sent to City Council was
distributed.
BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT FUND-RAISER
The freshman leadership group at CSU is putting together a basketball tournament on
Saturday, April 6 beginning at 9:30 at the Northside Aztlan Community Center. Their
purpose is two -fold — to raise money for the YAC gymnasium and to do outreach to the
local high schools. They have visited high schools and will finalize the tournament after
Spring Break. Format will be 3-on-3 and the team fee is $10. Prizes will be awarded.

YOUTH POLICE ACADEMY
Mark Larkin presented information on the Police Department's second annual Youth
Police Academy that is designed to acquaint kids with law enforcement and to build a
bond between them and the police. Sixteen kids (in grades 8-11, school year 2002-2003)
will be accepted in each of two 1-week sessions. A certain grade point average and good
citizenship is required. Applications should be available soon from the SROs and at
junior and senior high schools.
FOLLOW-UP ON JUNIOR HIGH VISITS
Mera is scheduled to meet with Webber Junior High on March 7. Ana met with Pioneer
on March 4. Pioneer students go on one field trip per week and would consider the YAC
a possible destination. Students there are not happy with skateboarding laws, and they
like the new skateboard park but resent bikers using it. They indicated that they wanted
the south Transfort bus routes reinstated. They suggested a newsletter to let them know
what the Youth Advisory Board is doing.
YOUTH ACTIVITY CENTER UPDATE
The March calendar and February participation reports were distributed. Staff also
distributed fliers about Java Jive on March 22 where there will be free admission and
lattes for $2.00. The event will be held from 8:00-10:00 PM and will feature a live band.
Letters from the Youth Advisory Board inviting students to Java Jive will be mailed to
junior high schools.
Beginning the week of March 18, the climbing wall will be open on Tuesday, Wednesday
and Thursday for YAC members who are belay -certified.
The last ski trip of the season is scheduled for March 11.
NORTHSIDE AZTLAN COMMUNITY CENTER UPDATE
Frank Martinez handed out a flier that listed Spring Break activities at the Northside
Aztlan Community Center. Staff at NACC will co -host an Easter egg hunt with Holy
Family Church.
OTHER BUSINESS:
• Ana reported on the first meeting of "Read On...." which was held on March 4.
Committee members each suggested 3 books. The list will be pared down at the next
meeting.
• National Youth Service Day. The group's idea was to do something productive for
the Youth Activity Center. Mandy will submit that idea to the organizers.
• TV show. The off -site filming will be done soon.
• Dave Mosnik stated that Poudre School District hosted a young men's conference
"Reaching Beyond" on March 6. Feedback is welcome.
• There will be a job fair at the Lincoln Center on March 19 from 3:30-6:30 PM for
youths for summer jobs and some year-round jobs.

• Carrie Visintainer from TEAM Fort Collins teaches a program called "Here's
Looking at You", a drug and alcohol prevention program for 6`h graders. She is
looking for students who would be interested in being part of the presentation.
• Janet Urban distributed the Boards and Commissions manual.
• Ana is resigning from the YAB effective June 30, 2002 after she graduates from high
school.
• Julian Archuleta has been removed from the Board; applications are being accepted to
fill the remainder of his term (until December 31, 2003).
Adjournment:
On a motion by Mera and seconded by Kaise, the Board voted unanimously (5-0) to
adjourn at 8:20 p.m.
