Call Meetine to Order:
Vice Chairperson Mera Geis called the meeting to order at 7:05 PM.
Approval of Minutes from September 4, 2002:
On a motion by Abby Zier and seconded by Cooper Liska-Smith, the minutes were
approved unanimously (5-0).
Aeenda Review: No changes.
Citizen Participation: None.

OPTIMISTS & KIWANIS PRESENTATION
Ken Hiesler and Stan Ulrich, representing the Breakfast Optimist Club, expressed their
interest in getting a youth club formed. It would focus on youth helping youth -type
projects as well as helping seniors. It would give participants an opportunity to be part of
a large organization and to promote optimism. The Optimist Club representatives would
like to go through the Youth Advisory Board to promote the youth organization, and they
would like the nucleus of the organization to come from this Board, primarily junior high
age members.

Heather McKee, representing the Kiwanis organization, would like to see a Key Club
formed for high school students. Kiwanis is dedicated to serving the children of the
world.
It was stated that schools no longer allow outside organizations to conduct their programs
in the schools, although it is believed that advertising could be posted in schools.
It was the Board's determination that there are similar clubs in the high schools that do
service projects, and those school -affiliated clubs would have an advantage as far as
recruiting students into their organizations. Peggy Bowers suggested to the service club
representatives that they contact Lin Nerger of FirstCall. The suggestion was also made
that the service club representatives contact schools that have organizations/clubs that
need service hours; maybe those participants would be inclined to volunteer.
ELECTION OF OFFICERS
Mera Geis was elected Chairperson; Cooper Liska-Smith was elected Vice Chairperson.
SCHOOL ASSIGNMENTS
Board member discussed the validity of school visits. It was determined that there could
be a more effective and creative way to gather feedback from the youths of the
community. Abby Zier suggested that surveys be administered to students, probably in
homeroom; staff would help tally the results. It would be important that the teachers who
hand out the surveys have background information on the Youth Advisory Board. A few
survey questions were suggested. Even though junior highs would be main focus, high
schools would be included as well.
YAB members expressed their willingness to take the surveys to the schools.
Distribution will be assigned when the survey is completed.
YOUTH ACTIVITY CENTER UPDATE/FUND-RAISING
The October calendar was distributed. YAC staff reported on their huge Halloween
event, "House of Freaks and Shrieks" which is scheduled for October 25 & 26 for junior
high -age youngsters. Intern Trevor Stark is conducting a 3-on-3 basketball tournament at
the YAC. He requested that YAB members distribute flyers to the schools.
Staff reported a huge increase in drop -in participation from last September (140) to
September, 2002 (440).
The Youth Team for the Youth Center Task Force is hosting a barbecue on October 20 to
raise funds for the gymnasium. Tickets are $25. In addition to great food, there will be a
silent auction, door prizes, a live band, and line dancing. A bicycle was donated for a
Nintendo tournament that will take place in the near future.

Barney Apodaca raised $514 in 2 weeks by soliciting for the gymnasium in the
downtown area.
NORTHSIDE AZTLAN COMMUNITY CENTER UPDATE
The tutoring program at NACC has begun and is held Monday through Thursday instead
of 2 days a week as it was last year. Staff continues to look for volunteers, and Board
members should let staff know of anyone that might benefit from tutoring. Staff is also
working with athletes who need help with academics in order to continue in sports.
Some school supplies were bought at the beginning of the school year, some special
project supplies are kept on hand at the NACC, and more school supplies will be
purchased at the beginning of second semester.
The wrestling program has begun, and again, help would be welcome. Drop -in
participation has picked up after a slow period. Staff will run a women's non -officiated
basketball league, and the annual toy drive will begin in November.
OTHER BUSINESS:
• A Poudre High School student is working on a project to paint the "graffiti room".
Dave Mosnik handed out a survey to determine interest. Kristie Blackmon will
supervise the project.
• The Board's annual work plan will be drafted at the next meeting. Board members
are to bring ideas to share.
Adjournment:
On a motion by Cooper and seconded by Chance Olson, the Board voted unanimously (5-
0) to adjourn at 7:55 p.m.
