Mason February 13, 2003, 5:30 — 6:50 p.m. Council Liaison: David Roy Staff Liaison: Angelina Powell Phone V: 407-7393 Phone: 221-6525 Chairperson: Ken Gordon Phone: 226-2453 A regular meeting of the Human Relations Commission was held on February 13, 2003 in the CIC Room, 300 W. LaPorte Avenue. HRC Members present Kimberly Clouser, John Coleman, Mary Gomez, Ken Gordon, Jr, , Parker Preble, Erik Rush, Christina Serrano, HRC Members absent Richard Miller /with notification HRC Members absent Rita Klepac /without notification Staff Members present Angelina Powell, Staff Liaison I. Call to Order. The meeting was officially called to order by Chair Ken Gordon, JR. at 5:30 p.m. II. Approval of Minutes. Mary Gomez made a motion to approve the minutes of January 9, 2003. Kimberly Clouser seconded the motion. The commission voted unanimously to accept the minutes without change. III. Fort Collins Bahi'I Faith Honor. Dan Devine, a former HRC member, affiliated with the Fort Collins BahaT Faith spoke of their interest in honoring the Human Relations Commission for their work at their Naw Ruz celebration March 20th, 6-9 p.m. at the Lincoln Center Canyon West Room. Dan was available for questions and asked for RSVPs for members and their guest(s). Angelina will coordinate the RSVP information so the Dan will have enough time to formalize their March 20" logistics. IV. Subcommittee Reports. Diversity Subcommittee The Diversity Subcommittee met Wednesday, January 29", 5:30 p.m. Room 213B Student Services Building. (Student Services Building is located off University Avenue.) Besides working on their contribution for the 2002 Annual Report, the subcommittee discussed the creation of a report/graphics for City Council from the B&C application demographics data and merging it with census data, they spoke of their planning role in the 3`d Film Series being organized by a social justice committee of the Foothills Unitarian Church, and a project that would identify resources for the homeless. Their next meeting will be on February 261" at 5:30. Human Relations Award Subcommittee. Subcommittee members met on Tuesday, January 28' at the Ultimate Support offices to begin the planning of the 2003 Human Relations Award process. They finalized the invitation to nominate mailing listthemailing went out February 12'. They identified potential keynote speakers. With Angelina's help (considering the Mayor's Human Relations Commission Page 2 calendar and space available at the Lincoln Center) a date was set for the Human Relations Award Breakfast. It will be Wednesday, April 30, 7:30-9 am in the Canyon West Room, 417 Magnolia. Subcommittee members will be making an extra effort to seek Youth nominations as historically that's the category that has the least nominations. Police Subcommittee. No report. V. Liaison Reports Northern Colorado Multicultural Corp. Parker Preble attended the last meeting of the NCMC. He reported that individuals are busy writing grants to underwrite NCMC's efforts in the community. Barbara Catbagan-Spalding, Director of the Human Rights Office attended that meeting. The group had a chance to consider the common goals of the NCMC and the City's Human Rights office to provide diversity educational opportunities for the community. VI. New Business. HRC Retreat. Barbara Catbagan-Spalding of the City's Human Rights office will facilitate the team building/visioning work the commission hopes to accomplish at their retreat on March 14 and 15. She asks us to more specifically identify what our goals/objectives for the retreat would be. Commission members agreed they need an understanding of their fellow team members... their individual and collective goals, how that fits into a team, how the commission fits into the community, and how this mix of people can "vision" and commit to the next generation. City's 2004-2005 Budget Preparation. Staff Liaison Angelina Powell shared information she received from the City's Budget office. Basically it is the HRC's opportunity to submit policy and service suggestions for consideration in the development of the City Manager's 2004 and 2005 recommended budget. Any comments or suggestions, either enhancements or reductions, for the recommended budget should be addressed to City Manager John F. Fischbach and be forwarded to the Budget Office by April 28, 2003. The commission will spend some time before the April 28" deadline to explore the possibilities. VIL Announcements. March 26, 7 p.m. at CSU's Lory Student Center Main Ballroom Ellen Ochoa, the first Latina NASA Astronaut, will speak. March 27" from 8-4 p.m. at CSU's Lory Student Center there will be a Colorado Women in Technology Conference. Target participants are young ladies from 41h grade to college age. April 3 and 4" the Diversity Summit will be held at CSU. VIII. Adjournment. Kimberly Clouser made a motion to adjourn. Erik Rush seconded the motion.
