Position: The Fort Collins Economic Advisory Commission members received a presentation on the Sign Code Update by Noah Beals at our June 20, 2018 meeting. We understand that the City of Fort Collins has taken important sign regulation steps since the 1970's to preserve the character of our unique city, while still preserving companies' abilities to adequately advertise their products and services. The members of the EAC agree with the overall purpose of the revised sign code, being to 1) clearly define while not reducing the allowable sign space allotted to each company, 2) give more signage options and flexibility for companies as technologies arise and 3) moving to reduce the number of billboards by offering billboard companies to replace a plurality of existing billboard permits for a fewer number of electronic billboards. Furthermore, we recommend that the city revise the messaging surrounding the updated city sign code, so that these points are made clear to the given audience.
