The management team is looking to update the age policy at the Senior Center to match the current ongoing programs and events at the Senior Center. The 18 years and older age restriction will be removed so that those 18 and under can be in the facility, only with adult supervision always. This aligns with current intergenerational programming that already occurs at the Center and allows for youth to participate with parents or grandparents in specialty SC programs like bad mitten or table tennis. A spirited discussion followed this update. The biggest concerns being that Seniors would be pushed out of the Senior Center and no longer have a space of their own within the city. The board is worried it will become another community center. Not all board members disagreed. Some thought that if there is unused space at recreation centers, then they should be used by people interested in using them. They also thought more intergeneration programming should be encouraged at the Senior Center because of all the benefits associated with it. Some discussion comments included the following:  Do not change the age restriction.  Designate certain senior days and youth days.  Offer badmitten and table tennis at other facilities.  Build another recreation facility.  Trial run of the policy for 1 year, evaluate how users feel and make changes after.  Signage and education on how to communicate between generations. Focus on how to encourage kindness and respectful communication between the generations. At its January 12th meeting, the SAB will discuss this matter further regarding policy communications, procedural compliance and related matters.
