HomeMy WebLinkAbout2020 - Golf Board - Annual Report Golf Board 2020 Annual Report January 13, 2021 413 South Bryan Avenue 2020 ANNUAL REPORT Page 1  The Golf Board advises and makes recommendations to the Director of Community Services and the City Council as to rules, regulations, policies, administrative and budgetary matters pertaining to the operation and maintenance of all City owned golf courses; City Park Nine, Collindale and SouthRidge. The City of Fort Collins Golf Board held 7 Regular Meetings & 3 Course Outings during June, July & August. The April & May meetings were canceled due to COVID. The September through November meetings were held through Zoom. Board Members were, Michael Hardisty, Ross Liggett, Kathy Meyer, Bob Pawlikowski, James Penland, Tom Rock & Jon Schmunk. Bob Pawlikowski transferred to the Housing Authority. Tom Rock resigned from the Board. Kathy Meyer & Jon Schmunk were automatically reappointed. Ross Liggett’s term expired in December but was eligible for reappointment. The Board elected officers were Kathy Meyer, Board Chairperson, along with James Penland, as Board Vice Chairperson and Tom Rock as Board Secretary. Upon Tom’s resignation, Jon Schmunk was appointed as Board Secretary at the December meeting. Susan Gutowsky served as City Council Liaison to the Board. Mike Calhoon, Director of Parks along with Scott Phelps, Manager of Golf, Dawna Gorkowski, Parks Finance Supervisor and Dawn Worth, Golf Administrative Assistant, provided staff support to the Board. Valerie Van Ryn, Emily Frare & Kathryn Gehrke provided Marketing support. 1. GOLF BOARD STRUCTURE AND GOALS  Continued to be advocates for City of Fort Collins Golf Division.  The Board was updated & provided feedback regarding the Reimagining Boards and Commissions.  Board Members were notified and attended the Super Issue meetings.  The Board advocated for Student Scholarships to assist youth in need. 2. BUDGET/FEES  The Board was updated monthly on the financial status of the Golf Division.  The courses were closed the majority of January through April due to weather and COVID, which impacted revenue. After reopening, green fees & carts rebounded well.  The Board approved and the golf department implemented Prime Time changes to include Prime Time at Collindale Monday through Thursday after 2:30 pm to match Southridge.  Reviewed the recommended 2021 fees in March. o There will be an increase in driving range & private cart rates in 2021.  Increased net revenue by $___ BOARD NAME YEAR Annual Report 2020 ANNUAL REPORT Page 2  3. ROUNDS/ANNUAL PASS SALES  In 2020 we had 84,128 18-hole rounds. o This is a 12.5% increase over 2019. o The last year we achieved this goal was in 2015.  We sold 398 annual passes in 2020. 4. TECHNOLOGY UPGRADES  RFP for a new point of sale system went out in December. 5. MARKETING  Marketing staff presented their 2020 Marketing Plan in January. o In December they presented their 2020 Marketing review. o Most of the budget allocated to marketing was removed due to high participation on the course related to golf being an acceptable form of recreation during the COVID-19 virus.  Regional Partnerships o Continued to research opportunities for partnerships. o The Birdie Alliance program was started with the cities of Boulder, Este Park & Greeley, exchanging complementary rounds for Super Pass holders.  Social Media o Created consistent social media presence. o Posted course COVID updates. o Continued monthly newsletter. o Live League & Tournament posts. o Bogie Bart videos. o Potts – Tents & Tailgates  Golf Specials & Course Promotions o Favorite Hole Friday o Holiday Promotion o Veteran’s Day o First Responders Day o League Promotions o Event Rental Space Promotion o Fall Specials o Disc Golf events  Junior Golf BOARD NAME YEAR Annual Report 2020 ANNUAL REPORT Page 3  o 5th grade golf program o Junior golf camps o Youth on Course o Promoted Junior Passes  No per play fee  6 additional buddy visits  Golf Survey o The survey went out weekly to all Annual Pass holders who played that week.  Digital & Print o Materials for annual pass vs. premier card comparison o Coupon insert in the Recreator o Tournament kits o Promotional material sent out with Utility bills o Ads for CU Collegian & CSU staff magazine o Digital IQ buys/trade  Partnerships o Continued our partnership with CSU Athletics, Poudre School District & Dellenbach, Pederson Toyota. o Many of the activities partnering with organizations like CSU were cancelled due to COVID-19 o Disc Mania disc golf 6. COURSE UPDATES/EVENTS  The Irrigation Design Contract for City Park Nine & Southridge was awarded to Irrigation Technologies.  Implemented a hiring freeze due to COVID & had to shuffle staff around.  Successful City Championship held at all three courses. o Several other course events were canceled in 2020 due to COVID.  Windshields & plaques were installed on all golf carts.  CSU intermural leagues played at all three courses.  City Park Nine o Sewer line repair. o Held successful disc golf events. o Tree removal & pruning.  Collindale o CGA Amateur Qualifier & Colorado Open Qualifier BOARD NAME YEAR Annual Report 2020 ANNUAL REPORT Page 4  o Three Junior Alliance events o CB & Potts held Tents & Tailgates events for the CSU games.  Southridge o Replaced driving range netting. o Fossil Creek transfer pump motor was replaced. o Drainage easement finalized. o Lake lining & dredging plans created for hole #9. o Land Donation South of hole 6 7. SUSTAINABLE PRACTICES  The Board was strong advocates for the Southridge & City Park Nine irrigation projects. o Irrigation RFP for design went out in December.  Randy Conard is a representative on the City’s Sustainable Team.  Composting of organic matter at all courses.  Continued integration of electric and hybrid equipment at all courses. 8. POLICIES & PROCEDURES  Staff continued to update the Policy Manual & will update the Board in 2021. 9. STAFF UPDATES  City Park Nine o Jim Higgins retired in December.  Collindale o Transferred Brent Johnson from Southridge Superintendent to Collindale in January, due to the retirement of Doug Evans. o Kevin Sheesley took over the contract for CB & Potts in June.  Southridge o Josh Evans was hired as the Southridge Superintendent in February.
