Minutes
Wednesday November 11, 2020 at 11:30 a.m.

Fort Collins, Colorado
Mission: The Senior Advisory Board shall serve in an advisory capacity to the Fort Collins City Council
on programs and policies that help aging citizens live full and interesting lives and continue to
contribute, participate, and share in the life of the community.

III. Administrative:

Deanna O’Connell, Jan Rossi, Sarah Schilz, Greg Wells

b. October Minutes Unanimous Approval – motion: David Kovach; seconded: Sarah Schilz
c. Correspondence – No response received from Council re. SAB’s concerns about
E -Scooter Program and recommendations for its improvement.

IV. Guest Speakers
1) Dr. Deana Davolos, CSU Professor and Director of Aging Clinic of the Rockies
addressed ACOR’s role, services and programs as well as her CSU classes
in Mind, Brain and Behavior.
Her presentation further addressed how ACOR strives to train younger adults in how to
best care for older adults and their mental health. ACOR provides grief and loss training
for its students as well as several complimentary services including services such as
Senior Peer to Peer Counseling (offering companionship for older adults with trained
older adults) and Caregiver Support Program (focused on specific needs, overall mental
health support). Furthermore, the Caregiver Mentorship Program is a more recent
program that allows experienced caregivers to pass along their knowledge to new
caregivers. In response to COVID, ACOR has coordinated zoom calls where seniors can
enjoy playing bingo and finding community virtually. Lastly, the CSU THRIVE project
connects with older adults via phone or web-based programs to assist with social support,
exercise programs, nutritional advice, music therapy, and more.
2) David Slivken, Executive Director, Poudre River Public Library District
discussed the impact on older residents of PRPLD’s four refocused priorities,
how the library system is reaching out to older adult communities; COVID’s impact –
both financially and operationally and the PRPLD Board’s strategic vision for our
community’s library system post-COVID and for the next decade.

V. Ongoing Initiatives
1. City Council’s Six Month Calendar – no update since prior meeting
2. Senior Center Activities – Emma Atchison (for Sara Mendez) shared:
1. Virtual Holiday Artisan Market is free online with over 100 artisans and crafters
2. Canteen Coffee has been selected as Center’s vendor for free coffee service.
3. An electric vehicle for the Senior Center is still being planned.
4. Pickleball drop in will now accommodate day of walk in players.
5. A holiday display at the Senior Center for the 2020 is in process.
