HomeMy WebLinkAboutYouth Advisory Board - Minutes - 09/07/2016MINUTES REGULAR MEETING WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 7, 2016 YOUTH ADVISORY BOARD DATE: Wednesday, September 7, 2016 LOCATION: Foothills Activity Center at the Foothills Mall, Community Room TIME: 5:30 – 6:45 p.m. Present: Katie Ko, Nicholas Lin, Betsy Pruznick, Vivian Bear, Roshini Narayana, Naitra Ramchander, Megan Ronquillo Absent: Nela Mohan Staff Present: Sara Stone, Staff Liaison, Steven Sorenson, Cultural Resources Board Chair, Sue Beck- Ferkiss, Affordable Housing Strategic Planner, and Christine Macrina, Boards and Commissions Coordinator 1). Meeting called to order by Betsy Pruznick at 5:30 p.m., Megan Ronquillo seconded the motion. 2). Approval of Minutes: Approval of the August 2016 Periodic Review minutes would be moved to the October meeting. 3). Chairman’s Report: None 4). New Board Members a. Roshini Narayana introduced herself to the board. 5). Cultural Resources Board presentation by Steven Sorenson a. Cultural Resources Board oversees the Lincoln Center, Spring Creek Gardens, and Museum of Discovery. It provides feedback on cultural related activities and events in the community. b. They distribute funds from Fort Fund which gives to nonprofit organizations in Fort Collins that host culturally/artistically significant events. c. Currently seeking a liaison from the Youth Advisory Board to provide input on culturally significant aspects towards youth. i. The Youth Advisory Board decided to discuss this further at future meetings. 6). Regional Youth Advisory Boards Collaboration Update by Nicholas Lin a. Nicholas reported on his work for reaching out to other Youth Advisory Boards. b. Greeley, Longmont, Loveland, and Cheyenne Youth Advisory Boards/Councils all stated that they were interested, but official meeting dates or event dates have not been finalized. 8). National League of Cities Update by Christina Macrina a. Money was found from Christina’s budget to send two students and a chaperone to the National League of Cities meeting. b. The event will occur in November 2017. 9). Twin Silos Park Groundbreaking/Design Review by Nicholas Lin and Sara Stone a. Nicholas Lin attended the groundbreaking for the Twin Silos Park on August 29, 2016. b. The design of the park has been finalized and the official ribbon-cutting ceremony will occur in 2017. The park features gardens, nature areas, and large silos. c. Nicholas Lin reported that the groundbreaking was a great opportunity to learn about the planning that went into the park and the developmental stages it was in. 10). Affordable Housing Presentation by Sue Beck-Ferkiss a. The Affordable Housing Strategic Plan is a plan updated every 5 years that outlines the general goals for the city’s affordable housing. b. Affordable housing is designed to help people get into renting their own home to eventually home ownership. c. It is difficult to balance how much the renter should pay and how much the government should pay. Usually people should spend 30% of their income on housing. d. Government owns large land parcels that can be used to build affordable housing. The question is to determine how many of the land parcels should be used immediately and how many should be stored for future use. 11). Adjournment: Chair Betsy Pruznick motioned to adjourn at 6:46 p.m., Katie Ko seconded the motion. Motion unanimously passed.
