HomeMy WebLinkAboutCommission On Disability - Minutes - 08/11/2016COMMISSION ON DISABILITY Fort Collins City Hall: Council Information Center 12:15 p.m. Thursday, August 11, 2016 Present: Marilee Boylan, Terry Schlicting, Leslie Efird, Michael Devereaux, and John Morris Absent: Sherri Reichow, Michelle Miller, Hettie Hueber, and Michael Marr City: Maureen McCarthy City Guests: Ray Martinez Guests: Misty Guregroy, Arianna Kilmer Call to Order: 12:31 p.m. 1. Introductions 2. Approval of Minutes: July – Minutes passed as amended, Boylan moved to amend Marr seconded. 3. Open Discussion: a. New West Fest is the weekend of August 12,13 and 14th . Will changes be made from last year, improve seating, available and assessable bathrooms, informed event staff about discriminatory practices? Martinez suggested that these needs should be part of the permit process for any city of Fort Collins event. b. Boylan gave information about a Human Resources workshop. Americans with disabilities Act on Sept 21 and hiring people with disabilities on Oct 12th . Boylan handed out an interview with Fort Collins Brewery about their employee David who has a developmental disability. She give the commission information about an event with speakers Dr Temple Grandin and Mr. Rupert Isaacson. 4. New Business: a. Parking in Old Town- McCarthy gave the commission a printed parking map of the Old Town area. The COD discussed the need for larger spaces for van parking, ramp access on all sides and more ADA assessable parking spaces. The commission would like information on where and how many van handicap parking spaces are available in the Old Town area. There is a need for a time limit on the downtown ADA assessable parking. A 48-hour maximum time limit per vehicle in a space. Members will look at the parking spaces in the downtown area and see where the need for more spaces is. This is what the commission will ask the city for. 5. Old Business: a. Mayor’s Luncheon update was giving by McCarthy. A subcommittee meeting will be on September 22nd at 12:15 in the Council Information Center. The COD chose the luncheon meal. Winners of the awards will be chosen at the September subcommittee meeting. b. Chapter 11 accessibility –building codes, Roll-in showers. The COD revisited the issue of the need for more roll-in showers for new developments being built in the city and student housing in and around CSU. The commission talked about the numbers of roll in showers needed for new buildings. The COD will ask for one roll in shower for every 26 units. It was discussed if commission would reach out again to the City. c. Adult changing tables where discussed. The commission brainstormed about where funding could come from and where the adult tables could be added around the city. Fort Collins parks are a suggestion and the Lincoln Center was considered. Getting this topic out for discussion to public, developers and the city is needed. McCarthy will ask a city guest to come to a COD meeting and hear our wants on this issue. 6. Community News and Updates: a. Misty Guregroy has received the respite at base camp she had been asking for her son. Schlicting moved to adjourn. Efird seconded. Meeting adjourned at 1:59 pm.
