Meeting Minutes

Present: Colleen Conway, Myles Crane, Johana Ulloa Giron, Joseph D. Leske, Victor Smith, Nancy
Tellez, Mary Vivo.
Absent: Jimena Sagas and Preety Sathe

CALL TO ORDER
The meeting commenced at 5:36 p.m.
AGENDA REVIEW
With adjustments to the agenda, it was unanimously approved.
APPROVAL OF MINUTES
The July meeting minutes were unanimously approved.
PUBLIC INPUT/PRESENTATION
No public input or guests present.
MEETING BUSINESS
Awards Planning Update: Commissioner Mary Vivo and Staff Liaison Beth Sowder will draft a letter
with an email link to encourage individuals to make nominations. Probable launch date will be after Labor
Day.
Memo to PSD: After suggested revisions and corrections, the memo to Dr. Sandra Smyser,
Superintendent of Poudre School District, was unanimously approved.
Forum Planning: Commissioner Johanna Ulloa Giron indicated that we have a speaker and everything
will be in place. Forums are scheduled for September 14, 2016, and October 26, 2016.
Community Equity Initiative: Chair Victor Smith will arrange for two individuals to speak to the
committee.
COMMITTEE AND LIAISON REPORTS AND ANN0UNCEMENTS
Per Commissioners
Commissioner Myles Crane shared the following:
Community issues. Multicultural Retreat will be September 24-25.
Discussed websites that could be visited and brought back to the HRC.
Citizen’s Liaison Program was discussed.
Citizen’s Review Board was also discussed.
Commissioner Johanna Ulloa Giron shared the following:
There is a new group “Showing up for Racial Justice”. Johanna would like information on this
group and possibly ask a speaker to visit the commission.
The book club book has been chosen, “Privilege, Power and Difference” by Allan Johnson.
Commissioner Giron will read and then present it to the commission to read.
Commissioner Giron and Staff Liaison Sowder will attend the community data report. There was
interest in how the Food Bank is using their data.
November is Homeless Awareness Month. A traveling exhibition will be here for one week.
Liaison Beth Sowder shared the following:
Brian Stevens will present on September 22, 2016, at the CSU Campus from 7-8:30 p.m.
Desplazado movie was discussed including gentrification, changing neighborhoods and
development.
Information re: shelter expansion was reported and discussed. Many organizations have
volunteered to shelter homeless people from November 2016, to April 2017.
Multicultural Community Retreat is filling up. Dates: September 24-25, 2016.
City Managers’ budget process was discussed.
Commissioner Nancy Tellez, as a new commission member, would like more information about the
commission.
Staff Liaison Sowder suggested that a January meeting address commission history and issues
to inform new commission members.
Commissioner Crane suggested an annual retreat after new members join.
Commissioner Mary Vivo suggested that we invite Assistant Police Chief Jerry Schiager to visit and speak
to the commission. Chair Smith will extend the invitation.
Vice Chair Colleen Conway will make changes to the Work Plan and send to HRC members. Changes
were unanimously approved.
The Appreciation Event for the Boards and their Board Members is scheduled for August 18, 2016,
3-7 p.m. at City Park.
Commissioner Crane and Staff Liaison Sowder mentioned the Clean Air Event on August 24, 2016.
CLOSING/Call for Adjournment
Commissioners unanimously approved adjournment at 6:56 p.m.
Next HRC meeting is Thursday September 8th at 5:30 p.m. in the CIC Room, City Hall West.
